The 2024 data on state GDP and personal income came in recently.

Growth rates of per capital personal income from 2023 to 2024:

Top 10
1. California (5.9%)
2. Alaska (5.5)
3. Hawaii (5.5)
4. North Carolina (5.2)
5. New York (5.0)
6. New Hampshire (5.0)
7. Maine (4.9)
8. South Carolina (4.9)
9. Wyoming (4.9)
10. Vermont (4.9)

Bottom 10
41. Arkansas (3.6)
42. Minnesota (3.6)
43. Illinois (3.5)
44. New Jersey (3.4)
45. Texas (3.3)
46. Kansas (3.3)
47. South Dakota (1.9)
48. Iowa (1.6)
49. Nebraska (1.2)
50. North Dakota (-0.8)

Florida came in at 3.8% good for 35th.

Mississippi came in at 4.9% good for 11th. That's great to see!

Looking at a longer time frame (2024 over 2014). The top 10 for per capita income growth are:

Utah, Oregon, California, Washington, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Maine, Colorado, Florida (the concentration of western states on this list is striking)

The bottom 10 are:

Nebraska, Maryland, Kansas, Texas, Connecticut, Louisiana, Iowa, Oklahoma, North Dakota (dead last on both lists and probably a victim of oil price changes)

Massachusetts was 12th and New York 19th in the decadal ranking.

I find a sub-minimum wage for youth employees unacceptable. I’m aware of the relative wondrous conditions of our nation’s youth in every measure regarding compensation, safety, pay, you name it. But if we’re going to subsidize our workforce with young workers that are actually mini FT employees, I find it ghoulish to intentionally deflate their wages relative to their older counterparts. I’m more compelled by the sub-minimum wage when it’s a specific situation like a job sweeping floors or something and you capped the sub-minimum wage at something like 500 hours a year, but Dollar General will use this legislation to make poor high school freshmen into unofficial shift managers at a lower rate of pay.

God you're insufferable. I worked for 5 l, 6 bucks an hour in middle and high school. Gained valuable skills, as well as behaviors. Show up on time, be accountable, meet people, earn some spending money.

It's not meant to be a fucking career
 
I haven’t read this Florida bill but I agree that it’s quite evil that they are forcing small children to work overtime as shift managers at Dollar General.

I work at a construction company, and if there's anything kids need today, it's to learn to work at an earlier age. We get 18-year-olds here all the time that are essentially worthless.

I've had a job since I was 14.

I see a lot of 18 year olds in my line of work. Some are useless. Some are amazingly capable and productive.

This is more of a personal gripe admittedly. I’ve been in retail leadership for years and while I’ve been fortunate enough to not be in these bad situations, I have seen all the tricks these companies use to squeeze their employees. If you let these employers deflate their payroll by pretending a 14-year-old is there to gain life skills for their future career, they will stretch that to absurdity. You’ll have high school freshmen working convenience stores and dollar stores overnight by themselves in no time.
