Going for the GDT sweep. Strider hosting the Muts 6/19

I just hope it’s not a showcase and he’s trade bait. That would suck. I’d rather- if he’s really this good- to put him in the pen as mentioned above.

I’m always paranoid about us being like Detroit and giving away John Smoltz… or us being like us and giving away Waino.

For all the pitching prospects the Braves have traded away since 90 there is really only two guys that stand out. Waino which was a pathetic trade and Jason Schmidt who was a casuelty of already having a HOF laden pitching staff and brought in Neagle to round it out. It also took him going to another team before he figured it out too.

I’d add Feliz to that list (Matt Harrison had some good moments as well) but yea.. Braves have historically been good at self scouting their own pitching talent.

Much thanks as always Hula...I'm not a fan of pushing him this fast, and I also hope it's not a showcase. I know I've hyped him, but I think you guys are going to like what you see. If he gets hit around it won't take anything away from him. In an alternate universe, the Braves are just verifying what they see and using someone else to trade. Unless the trade is of the bigly kind.

If they let him unleash his splitter....it's going to fun.

Dan Meyer for Huddy worked out pretty well.

His trade value isn’t going to change based on 5-6 innings at the MLB level. Teams already value him however they are going to value him.

He’s simply the next guy who’s earned the chance to make an MLB start, and the Braves are not shy about being aggressive with talented arms.

The Wainwright trade won us another division title, but caused us to wallow in below average starting rotation hell until 2009. Classic win now move.

Eh. They've had success to an extent. Strider is not the norm though. AJSS still had to progress in the minors before he found "it.". The Coppy boys were yoyo's..etc..etc. I don't think this is about trade value showcasing. They genuinely think he won't face plant. It's exciting for me for sure whatever happens.

AA said he saw him twice and they feel he gives them the best chance to win.

JD Drew was legitimately MVP level that season.

The process to trade for Drew was awful, but JS got lucky with Drew staying healthy and breaking out. Then got extremely unlucky with Waino becoming a borderline HoF starting pitcher.

Such a weird transaction.

As chop2chip mentioned it was lucky we had a career year from Drew. He was thought of as a talented but injury prone player who happened to have his career high in games and production.

It was a reactionary move after the Braves should have just re-signed Sheffield instead.

Until Acuña in 2023, I believe he had the single best season per WAR in Atlanta history.

Late career Shuerholz is a bizarre cocktail of impressive player scouting (Edgar Renteria, Estrada, JD Drew, Teixeira, Jaret Wright) mixed with disastrous desparation.

They didn’t have money though. Time Warner had just recently tightened the purse strings in preparation for a sale.

The Wainwright moves are ok if you have the money to keep the player you are trading for.

JD Drew would put up another 19.1 WAR after leaving Atl. Had we been able to keep Drew, the 2007 rotation likely features Smoltz, Huddy, and Wainwright leading the charge. Which means that we likely never trade for Tex and the end of JS's tenure might look a lot better.

That team wins the division easily. And the 2006 team makes the playoffs. That 2006 team was already a beast offensively. Now add JD Drew and not having to throw Jorge Sosa or Chuck James out as your number 3 starter.
