GDT 7/5: Marcell Moves Down; Will Today be a Bummer?

Remember that kelenic trade? How bout the unnecessary extensions that put us up against the luxury tax in what should be a prime time contention year. Not to mention bombing the last 2 trade deadlines
The Kelenic trade was super weird. I get that he was trying to get a guy to dream on but that was strange. The extensions were good. If everybody could see into the future we'd all be perfect. Nobody and I don't care who you are could see Harris not being able to hit right now but he's young and an elite defender so I'm not upset about it. Who else Strider? He was elite before getting hurt and should be fine next year after a normal offseason. Olson is the best 1b in baseball and Riley has the 2nd most hits in the NL and is tied for 6th in baseball and will still hit 30 homers, 100 rbi, and a .270-.280 average. Murphy? Murphy is still a top 5 catcher and could bring back several really good pieces in trade. Our problem is the bottom 5 in the lineup. Albies, Harris White, Allen, Ozuna, Williams, and Fairchild can't hit at all and that's where our problem is. If we had 2 of those guys hitting our record would look a lot different. I've already struck this year off and hope for the best pick we can get at this point.

Kelenic trade was money only. We gave up nothing of value. The extensions have all been great, except for Harris this season. And of course that assumes Harris doesn't rebound.

You can't blame someone for trades they didn't make, especially when you don't even know what asking prices were.

The extensions are why we're up against the luxury tax now. They cost the team a chance at improving this season

The Braves aren't exactly the only team to reset the tax.

Harris is the only extension hurting us at the moment. All of the others have worked out fantastic.

It's not any of the individual extensions. In isolation, they are all reasonable deals. The problem is the sum total of the extensions that have limited flexibility. The front office made some assumptions that no one was going to get injured and that performance for all of the guys would remain high. Injuries have been the bigger problem and there was neither the minor league depth nor the budget room to fill in for guys. I think if the goal is to optimize the Acuna window, the budget has to be nimble and the extensions (and the budget burden carried by the Kelenic acquisition) just put the team in a box.
