2025 Around The League Thread

Competitive balance needs to be the number one issue in these talks. Two or three teams spend insane amounts to stay on top and a solid third of the league doesn't have any hope of competing even before the first pitch is thrown. It's not healthy for the sport.

There needs to be a salary cap, a salary floor, and the difference in total dollars going to the players can be made up in revenue sharing.

If it takes a lockout then I'd be willing to let that happen if it means fixing the problem that's making baseball so often unenjoyable.

I'd also kill the deferred cash BS that the Dodgers are pulling. Make a rule that no more than 10% of the total value of the contract can be deferred.

I think the Dodgers know it's coming that's why they did it so it's grandfathered in to the contracts already signed. I'm hoping AA spends like crazy this winter before the lockout and other things change.

Job #1.

Also with you on the competitive balance angle. Right now there are less than a half-dozen teams that can comfortably eat bad contracts and send guys to other teams with a wad of cash in their pockets. One of my cardinal rules is to avoid paying guys to play for other teams. That gets relaxed a bit at the trading deadline with dollars going along with an expiring contract, but so many off-season deals need to involve cash to pay for contract obligations and that's screwing things up.

Disagree on Competitive Balance

You shouldn’t penalize a team and thier fan base for spending money because they want to win. it’s not the Dodgers nor the Yankees fault, that the Marlins owner or any other
owner is to lazy to spend more money.

Also, how’s the salary floor working out for the NFL? same group of teams near the playoffs every year

Has it leaked what he allegedly did? i didn’t think you could bet on baseball in the 9th innings
You can bet on the first pitch of the inning. Someone posted a video where 7 of his 40 first pitches of the innings he has started have been unhittable to where a batter won't even think of swinging like 50 foot dirt balls, balls that almost hit the batter, etc.

that would be great points if every team had a regional network like the Dodger$ and Stankee$ do... there is never going to be a world where the Marlins can spend like those teams in a unregulated market.

last i checked the Marlins, indians and Kansas City have as many WS wins as the Mets, Phillies and Rangers.

good coaching, drafting and player development can circumvent disparities in payroll.

It doesn't matter whose fault it is. LA and NY have a competitive advantage simply by being in the media market that they are in. It has nothing to do with who their owners are. They will inherently make way more money than 80% of the other teams in baseball regardless how good/bad they actually are or how much money they spend on their roster.

The NFL does pretty great in terms of parity actually. Currently only 5 of the 32 teams have an active playoff streak of 3 years or longer. Only 3 teams haven't made the playoffs in the last 5 years.

The nfl wouldn't be the sport it is if the cowboys could buy whoever they wanted

It’s insane to argue that players should get paid less, and that’s what will happen if you implement a salary cap.

Owners want to put the least amount possible into their teams and then complain when they can’t compete. Stars sell. Winning sells. Get some, do some, and then you’ll have more money to spend. Putting the bare minimum into your investment and then complaining about other team’s advantages is whiny bullshit.

Besides LA and NYC are shitholes right? What advantage do they have

Then split all tv money evenly among all mlb teams

is the problem really the dodgers or is the real problem a lot of owners don’t care enough to spend tens of millions to improve thier teams? it’s the latter.

funny how when the braves won the WS a few years ago, there was no mention about how unfair the payroll system was then.
