Oh I think technological change is what is causing some parts of the labor force to lag behind. Absolutely. And immigration has been a convenient scapegoat to avoid facing that reality.

Immigration enforcement will be the key to ensure this transition period isn't as rough as it could be.

I have a feeling for those that were hard working in the first place it will adjust just fine.

People in the private sector lose good jobs and take pay cuts all the time. And if this person was truly worth their comp they'll probably find a job in short order.
Hopefully they can pay their mortgage this month with your optimism.

im with thethe on this one... I don't really hold much sympathy for federal workers losing their jobs. "public service" should not be a career
If something has been a certain way for the entire length of their career, it’s not their fault it suddenly changed.

its not anyone's fault when layoffs happen. but they happen to all of us and the country doesn't mourn them. the difference is federal workers have always been takers without every producing anything

To be fair, when layoffs of this scale happen, there’s usually *some* bit of outrage, but I think it’s hard to compare the response to the two directly because we don’t vote for the Board of Directors at Amazon.

And I don’t think everybody looks at federal employment the way you do. I get more value to my life from the local postal worker than I do from a lot of more “productive” workers.

Eh… not sure about this one. I think we all can empathize with the fear of losing our ability to provide for our families. People tend to express plenty of outrage and sadness when they hear of people being laid off

Sure. I felt bad for my nanny when I had to fire her. But that doesnt stop me from firing her if she isn't producing any value for what I'm paying for.

As a tax payer, we need to fire a lot of people. And I wish them success in whatever they pursue next

But the biggest mistake we've made is treading the federal government as a jobs program instead of public service

Of course I agree with all of this. I take umbrage with “wish them success in whatever they pursue next” because I think that hasn’t actually happened during these mass layoffs. I’ve seen more blame for federal workers than I have for Congress for (effectively) hiring them.
