2025 Around The League Thread

Nepotism does run rampant and I agree with thewupk that it's not just in the announcing field.

Of all the Caray's (and I've listened to three of them), I thought Skip was the best. I grew up in Southern Minnesota and on summer nights when the wind was blowing right, we could pick up KMOX, which was the Cardinals' flagship radio station with Harry Caray at the microphone. Even then, I got tired of listening to his rambling and hystrionic play calls. If anyone ever wonders where Chip got his penchance for saying a routine fly had a chance to go out of the park, it was from his grandfather. Harry became a cultural icon and I'll admit I'm probably in the minority, but I found his announcing a bit buffoonish. I prefer announcers that don't make their own personalities part of the action.

Skip, on the other hand, had an unparalled wit that was often belied by his deadpan delivery. Both he and his dad could slice up a player, but Harry used a machete while Skip used a pen knife.

I don't want Iglesias, I don't buy his turnaround. His second half success has been luck fueled with a BABIP of .192 and a bery unsustainable HR/FB of just 3%. In the second half he's walked guys at a higher rate, K'd them at a lower rate, given up more hard hit balls, and actually posted a higher xFIP.

He was probably a little unlucky in the first half with a BABIP of .316 (not super high but a little high) and a HR/FB of 15.6% (not crazy higher than his career 11.8%.

For the full season Iglesias has a xFIP of 3.79. Not awful but nothing special. Moreover, his xFIP has consistently been trending up the last 5 years.

He's not a closer anymore and I wouldn't pay him more than middle reliever money on a one year deal.

I would rather move on from Iggy as well. Mostly b/c I want a better closer. I would take Iggy back as a high leverage reliever, but I don't think he would be cool with the demotion from closer.

Even if Iggy was a guaranteed to continue his second half stats next year I certainly dont want him closing. What we need to do is get more SP and use Reynaldo, Holmes and Strider out of the pen. All 3 could close but what I would do is use Lopez/Strider for 1 inning per apperance the first month then 2 IP the second month then 3 IP the third month. By then Sale will have tripped and fractured his pelvis. Schwellenbach will have caught Ebola and Waldrep will get the inevitable TJ right after having some success in the majors.

Tough crowd... Iggy basically had a bad month. Since may 1...
10.03 k9
1.93 bb9
2.52 FIP

Career numbers...
10.63 k9
2.45 bb9
3.22 FIP

If we can upgrade him, sure. He's still pretty good though
It wasn't just a bad month. He was terrible in both April and May. That extended into the first week of June and the horrific loss to AZ where they scored 7 runs in the 9th.

To his credit, he bounced back after that disastrous AZ appearance and he's had a 1.60 ERA ever since. But even this stretch has a lot of red flags. Starting with the .27 HR rate. There is zero chance that is sustainable. His HR/FB rate is also a ridiculous 2.2% over this time. Again, this a number that it is nowhere near sustainable. His career average is 11.8% and the MLB average is around 13%.

In short, he's an aging pitcher with declining stuff. He should not be the closer on a team that has WS hopes.

His hr/fb rate was 25.0% in your sample period (through May). That's not sustainable either. 10.3% for this season. His hr/fb rate for the last 5 seasons combined is 10.6%
