Snit Watch

I've been easier on Snitker than most, but I think this team needs some adjustments and I don't know if Snitker's managing style fits with what needs to happen. I think the construction and utilization of the bench is a chicken/egg conundrum that revolves around the questions "Does Snitker know how to utilize a bench?" or "Is the bench populated with guys Snitker believes can't play?" It's probably a bit of both.

I don't know what the clubhouse atmosphere is like. Olson definitely wants Snitker back because he can go into a 3/50 slump and Snitker is still going to trot him out there every day. Sale appears to be the leader of the team and that role usually falls to an everyday player. I think everyone has to walk on eggshells when it comes to Acuna (just an observation) and how the front office and whoever is in the manager's role deals with him next season when he probably should be DHing a fair amount will be interesting. I don't know how much clubhouses matter (see Yankees' Bronx Zoo and the A's of the early-1970's for teams with dysfunctional clubhouses that were extremely good), but the entire team seemed flat this year. Injuries and inconsistent play can contribute to that, but I don't know what, if anything, Snitker was doing to counteract that. There's a lot of talent on the team and it's going to be an interesting off-season.

fast forward to 2026.. twit to his players.. Don't challenge any balls or strikes until the 9th inning because that is the only inning that has high leverage.
 
Snit corrected course late in the season and ended on a winning note. Now he can transition into a role that allows him to share his wealth of baseball knowledge with the entire organization as VP of Coaching Staffs.

See how easy it is to sunset him? Figure it out and get a competent tactician at the helm.
 
I'm pretty sure AA is merely a middle man here, but if the organization wanted to move on from him as manager, that conversation would have taken place last night/this morning. If we don't hear anything in the next few hours, then we really are just waiting on him to decide whether he wants to come back. I don't believe AA is allowed to decide - everything in the tone of what he said last time he spoke to the media suggested he was hoping Snit would make it easy and retire. Snit should do the honorable thing here. A competent organization can't hamstring itself into a one-year farewell tour with no off ramp if things go way south again.
 
Buster Posey, who clearly has no business being a GM, just fired Bob Melvin. While Melvin is a bit older than what I'd like to see leading the Braves, he and Schumaker make a couple of very good candidates to replace Snit.

Melvin led the As from 2011-2021, led SD to it's first postseason in forever, and has been named manager of the year 3x. He is a guy who knows how to leverage a bench, and would be a good fit if he still has it in him to lead.
 
Melvin seems perfect. His pedigree should carry instant respect from veterans, He managed Olson and Murphy in Oakland, and is a clear upgrade with analytics and roster management.

Low risk, medium reward is basically all we need.

Agree. The Braves have to have their eye on the window and Melvin would clearly fit that timeline. I just hope that whoever gets the job gets some input on what is needed on the bench. I harp on it more than most (and, truth be told, Snitker may not have been able to utilize the best bench in the world properly), but I can't believe they couldn't put together a better bench. Remember, this is the team that went north with Bryan de la Cruz. Seems like ages ago, but it's hard to forget. Also, Allen came north on the bench and while it was right for him to replace Arcia, he really has no place on the bench. He's a guy who can start on a team that hits the crap out of the ball consistently, but he really doesn't have much value on the bench.

I find it hard to believe that AA couldn’t have built a better bench even with Snit pulling the strings. Keep in mind that the Braves under AA and Snit have been Trail Blazers by carrying and rotating multiple all star level catchers (which requires much more advanced roster management than finding regular at bats for the fourth outfielder, etc).

I think AA made the call to reset the luxury tax and wasn’t willing to spend any money on reserve players. He just struck out on basically all of the dice rolls like De La Cruz, Allen, Kelenic, etc.

You mean like when they fired FreddyG only to turn around and hire Snitker. Nah, they’d never do that

I have a feeling resetting the luxury tax was not AA's call. I give him the massive benefit of the doubt and theorize the choice to reset the tax was made after some of the offseason dominos had already fallen, and he didn't have time/resources to pivot.
