Some Red State/Blue State Indicia

Katie Porter is a joke. She is what a lot of people around here seem to think the Democratic Party has become. Hopefully she doesn't get elected governor.
 
I suspect the current generation of Omar Yaghi's will be all right. But they will mostly be getting their educations elsewhere and making their contributions elsewhere.

I very much agree with that. Hopefully, we find ways to allow more talented people in red states to reach their potential. Imagine how great this country would be if folks in red states could develop into top scientists and entrepreneurs at the same rate as immigrants and their children and folks in blue states. The talent is there. It just needs opportunity and nurturing.

I rode Amtrak from NYC to Canada and back a couple of years ago. It was a great experience, with the exception of the stretch from NYC to somewhere around Springfield Mass. I just don’t know why anyone would voluntarily subject themselves to that as anything but a backup form of transportation. The trains were great, the landscape was mostly beautiful, too many of the people gave too many reasons to avoid them.

I’m a NYC apologist, but I admit the subways are a dumpster fire. They’re markedly worse since covid.

Amtrak I’ve never had any real issues, though. (At least not with the other passengers…the overall service is another thing). If you’re going between NYC-Philly-DC, I’ve found it’s often the best of the terrible options between train / flying / driving, depending on the time of day.
 
Im not sure how many times we have to explain to the PhD that violence among family/friends is less worrisome than complete random acts of violence committed daily in the blue cities
