Second ('Third') Trump Presidency Thread

I’m pretty shocked at the margin in NJ’s race. I figured Sherrill would probably win, but it would be a 2-3 point contest in either direction, similar to 2021. Instead, she put belt to ass.

speaking of reflection...i think this is a good point

candidate quality matters but not always enough in a wave election....(R) had a decent candidate for governor in NJ and came closer than in Virginia...(D) had a bad candidate for AG in VA but he won

victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is but an orphan and all that jazz
To be very fair, I’m guessing 4 years ago the New York Mayoral race didn’t feature two other prominent Democrats.

yeah...the last NY race has a completely different dynamic...the lefty candidates did not do well in the primary...it ended up coming down to Adams and Kathryn Garcia, a competent centrist. candidate...it's a shame Garcia didn't win

My point was that Dems won by such high margins in VA that Jones was carried across the finish line and that Republicans pushing this as a sign that voters are simply rewarding political violence might want to take a step back and ponder why they also lost all those other races.
It doesnt matter, anyone who was aware of what he said and still voted for him to be the tip law enforcement enforcer of the state either has no moral standards at all, or endorses how he thinks.

The sad reality is a significant part of the dem base has demonstrated that they are alligned with how he thinks

Turns out DIY dads that buy luxury goods like hammers, parents that want to buy more than 1 doll for their kids, millennials that buy PlayStations all vote.

or maybe they listened to the healthcare experts who told them persistent 3%(and rising) inflation isn’t good.

Or didn’t enjoy the last 9 months flirting with hot wars in Iran and Venezuela (or invading Greenland).

Or dealing with the anxiety from the president unilaterally tariffing another country over commercials.

(other things like shitposting from government accounts, crypto rug pulls, infighting with the groypers, etc don’t help either)

Although Mamdani got all the press, Spanberger and Sherrill are the ones with profiles that could play well on the national stage. They would do well to concentrate on their jobs as governors, but I could see both running for national office someday. They have already checked off the national security box. Now they are about to get executive experience.

In the grand scheme of things, this is not an unusual swing against the party in the WH.

In 2021, the governors' races in both VA and NJ swung 13 points toward (R) relative to Biden's vote share in 2020.

In 2025, the swings toward (D) were 9 points in VA and 7 points in NJ relative to Harris' vote share.

In 2021 NYC elected a former cop chief

In 2025 NYC elected a guy who wants to do away with police and prisons

Are dem policies so bad that the people get even more desperate? Or are they so good that people want to push further?

Cuomo is toxic. Adams is a crook. Mamdani is a socialist without real governing experience.

Not a great set of choices. Voters (including New Yorkers) make bad choices sometimes. I don't think Mamdani over Cuomo is an especially bad choice. But Adams over Kathryn Garcia in the 2021 primary was a bad choice. I thought so at the time and with the benefit of hindsight it has become even more obvious.

Sure, whatever. But I think you’re also likely overestimating the percentage of people who knew about Jones’ texts and specifically voted for him with that knowledge in an election where the Dems absolutely obliterated the Republicans overall.

the swing was less than from 2020 to 2021...There were some VA House of Delegates seats that flipped. But none where Trump was +5 or more in 2020. This was not a tsunami. The spreads in the governors' races look bad because of the polls being off and also because VA and NJ lean blue anyhow.

The hyperventilating over an off year election is probably a little extreme. I see the GA PSC results being looked at as “bellwether” now. I think I am pretty politically active and even I don’t go to vote for that when it’s the only thing on the ballot. Pubs definitely won’t do as well in 26 as they did in 24. That’s natural. That doesn’t mean we need to wring hands over Virginia supporting an incredible candidate in Youngkin last time more than an also ran like Sears yesterday.

The top race of the ballot always drives the ballot. If you lean right there wasn’t much to be excited about yesterday. Sears? Public Service Commissioners? Cuomo or Sliwa? That dude with a funny name in blue NJ who looks like he chases ambulances?

Also, lol at calling Spanberger a moderate. I don’t think there is one. For all of his rational talk, even Fetterman is a reliable vote for anything the party wants.
