Some commentators have labeled this wave of American emigrants the “Donald Dash” since numbers have spiked under President Trump’s second term. But the phenomenon has been building for years—fed by the rise of remote work, mounting living costs and an appetite for foreign lifestyles that feel within reach, especially in Europe.

In different conversations say people leaving blue states to red states your characterization of the motives of the individual are far different than this scenario.

Odd......

There has obviously been a sharp acceleration in 2025, but the trend toward more Americans moving abroad has been going on for a while. And the reasons are a complex mix. Work, family, affordability, lifestyle and more.

In some cases the motives are similar. People make their money and build up their savings in a dynamic economic environment then move somewhere with a slower pace and cheaper cost of living to smell the roses.

I'll be retiring in a few years and have started scoping out some possibilities. I love France and have always had a thang for border regions where different cultures meet. So I've been thinking of Alsace and the SW region near the Spanish border. I also like mountains Really high mountains. So places in or near the Himalayas and Andes hold a certain appeal. I have a friend who is part Ecuadorian (father from Cuenca mother from Wisconsin). He's always telling me how beautiful and cheap Cuenca is and how it has turned into an expat haven. I'll check it out at some point although I am not looking for a place that is an expat haven. Of course, where my kids are (and any future grandchildren) will figure into the equation as well.
