GDT 5-4: Braves-Mariners; Welcome back, Sean Murphy

Let’s chill the fuck out for a minute. It’s pretty obvious given how the first six weeks have unfolded and how he’s managed similar situations that he would not have left Ritchie in if we had a pen at full strength. We still had the lead when he left the game too.
Again. The pen shape is a bad excuse. He could’ve thrown, Bummer, Carrasco with a 4 run lead. They ended up pitching anyway in a 1 run game.

Yes he could have, and odds are they would have quickly been in the same situation, and there would have been relentless bitching about bringing in Bummer and Carrasco to let them back in the game. Then you would have been right back in the same spot of having to use the same top guys in a one-run game with two more against the Mariners and three against a very good Dodgers lineup that is likely to force you into the pen early.

What are you talking about? That is what ended up happening because he stuck with Ritchie. It may have ended up happening anyway, but there’s a much less chance without Ritchie walking the world and throwing meatballs in the 6th inning.

Like, this isn’t complicated logic. Anyone trying to defend Weiss last night is just ignorant as hell.

It was not the optimal move to leave Ritchie in, but Bummer/Carrasco was hardly a better call.

If anything, though, I think we are seeing that the six man rotation thing is not going to be sustainable for long.

It absolutely was a better call. Ritchie had nothing basically all night. This isn’t hindsight. We were all questioning Weiss in the moment. We had a 4 run lead. Both of those guys ended up pitching in a one run game.

Like come on.

Probably a good spot to see what the kid can do and learn.

Don’t teach them you are coming at the first sign of trouble every time

I didn’t like the outcome, but my first thought was that they would probably both learn from the experience and be better prepared for the future.
