GDT 5/12/26: Braves vs Cubs - Kim’s Season Debut

The Phillies are about to enter a brutal stretch facing @Pittsburgh, vs Cincinnati, vs Cleveland, @San Diego, @Dodgers, vs San Diego. Let's see where they stand after that
If they go .500 or better over that stretch, I'll consider them a legitimate threat. I get the feeling they won't. Harper hasn't made his annual IL visit yet either.

If I were a gambling man, I’d take the under on Braves stolen bases for the next two weeks. I suspect those boys are going to be relatively chained to the bag out of fear of the wrath of Walter…..

Very pleased with WW so far outside of his handling of Ritchie in Seattle and him using our best relievers in 4 plus run leads meaning they are burned the next day on a couple of occasions.

I can’t help but think of what Snit does last night after Holmes got out of the bases loaded situation at only 78 pitches. Snit definitely tries to squeeze one more inning out of him.

They have three good hitters. They have a good rotation and a good closer with a suspect bullpen. Their defense is horrendous.

I just don’t believe they’re very good.
I can easily imagine a Philly fan saying similar things about the Braves. And at least on paper, they wouldn’t be totally wrong.

„Only three good hitters“
„Starting LFer suspended for the season“
„Suspect rotation led by a 37 year old with a history of injury“
„Deep bullpen but without elite talent“
„they‘ve been playing over their heads. I think they will come down to earth soon“

Note: These aren’t my opinions, just the hypothetical viewpoints of an imaginary but reasonable Philly fan (I know, I know).

Just remember the Braves in 2022. And for those old enough, think back to 2002.

Except that none of what your hypothetical Phillies fan said has any basis in reality.

The bullpen has 3 elite arms in it, for starters (Lee, Suarez, Iglesias). The lineup is deep. There are a couple guys playing over their heads, but we’ve got our best player on the IL and Riley is just now starting to hit. Our catcher/DH has also been hurt all year. The rotation is being held together by duct tape, but it has a lot of potential either direction.

We’re also one of the best defensive teams in the league. And we’ve got the RD to back it up. Very little of what the Braves are doing is fluky.

You mention the 2022 team, but that team actually had a good run differential and higher order winning percentage despite the poor record in the first two months.

I mean anyone can say anything…doesn’t make it logical or true.

You need more intelligent imaginary friends

I think you just hate him because he‘s a Phillies fan (and rightfully so…f them).

Still, a lot of what you say reeks of recency bias. If I could time-travel back to late March, and show you last night’s lineup, and also told you that Ronald was injured and sitting on 2 HR in mid May, and also told you that Rey Lopez is now in the pen and we are giving regular starts to Elder, Holmes and JR Ritchie, would you have said „Sounds like a .700 team to me!“? Even if I also told you that Olson and Baldwin are having all-star seasons,Ozzie is closer to his old self, Sale is Sale, and we have one of the best reliever trios in the game, you‘d probably still think „Hopefully we‘re above .500“.

Point being: Based on the true abilities of these players, I think we are playing over our heads. I wouldn’t bet on the Braves even playing .600 ball the rest of the way, let alone .700. I still think they’re going to cruise to the division title. But I don’t think they will look like the best team in MLB by the end of the season.
