Elizabeth Warren: “Violence is never the answer, but people can be pushed only so far… This is a warning that if you push people hard enough, they lose faith in… government… and start to take matters into their own hands.”
AOC: “All of that pain that people have experienced is being concentrated on this event. It’s really important that we take a step back, this is not to comment and this is not to say that an act of violence is justified, but I think for anyone who is confused or shocked or appalled, they need to understand that people interpret and feel and experience denied claims as an act of violence against them.”
Bernie Sander: Condemned the killing as “outrageous” and “unacceptable,” saying “nobody should applaud it” and “killing people is not the way.” At the same time, he described the public reaction as a reflection of anger at an industry that denies care while profiting hugely, and used it to advocate for systemic reform like Medicare for All.
Ro Khanna: “There is no justification for violence… You condemn the murder of an insurance executive who was a father of two kids. At the same time, you say there’s obviously an outpouring [of anger] of people whose claims are being denied, and we need to reform the system.”
