GDT 5/15….. Strider: Takin’ it to the Streets Leads Off

The difference between this team and last year was this year, even when our top guys aren't producing, the other guys on the roster pick them up. Tonight it was Yaz.

The difference is the pen being out of this world. With last years pen we are a .500 team. Ww have 4 relievers that would be the best reliever on most teams.

Great win, but I don’t think anyone watching the game came away with the conclusion that Strider was dominant. FB got up to 97-98 a couple of times, but mostly sat 94-95. He couldn’t locate the slider consistently. You can get away with this against the Red Sox, but a good offense would have hit Strider hard I feel.

Good for Yaz. Great AB he started 0-2 thanks to his manager.

Agreed that “dominant” isn’t the right word. That said, he’s still 90th percentile or better in K%, Whiff% and SwStr%, his average iVB is sitting strong even after the Rockies start, which was nerfed in Colorado, and his horizontal break has been great. So no, I wouldn’t call him dominant, but he’s been very good and the underlying peripherals are solid. He’s already worth 0.6 bWAR too, so I’m a happy camper so far.

Agreed. I was just hoping for a little more stuff-wise, after his drastic improvement from the Colorado to the LAD game. Maybe he‘s learning to be more efficient and can shift into an extra gear when necessary. But 3 walks against 4 K is not elite by any definition.

I will say that the whiff rate and swing and miss is there. That's likely more important in terms of long-term metrics.

Imagine the view of fans from other teams. We got #1 and 3 in ERA in the NL. Then we have the big 4 with ERAs of 1.32, 0.84, 0.47, and 0.00 coming out of the pen. Just those 4 relievers in 68 innings has amassed 2.5 WAR.
