Shae Simmons Called Up; Ian Thomas Optioned to Gwinnett

I actually alright with this. I'm a huge Thomas fan, but there's no reason to hang your head for being sent down for a bit. He will be called back up, he's too talented not too. Shae, he looks like he could be an immediate impact. The guy's stats are eye poppin', the boy can pitch.

Agreed. I think Thomas will probably benefit from getting innings in AAA. My guess is they will move him into the rotation.

This is wonderful news! Simmons has lights out stuff. Can't wait to see him in action for the big league club.

I'm glad Thomas is going back down to AAA. His time was unpredicatable in ATL and we might need a starting pitcher next year.

Minor, Julio, and Wood are likely locks assuming health. Then we have guys that should be ready he'd be fighting with like Sims, Hursh, Graham, Northcraft, and Martin. Plus who knows with Medlen and Beachy.

There is no chance that Sims is in the major leagues next year. I am not in favor of rushing a guy that young with that much potential. JMO.

Otherwise, there are those guys and the likely vet that the team retains via free agency. Who knows, if Ervin doesn't command HUGE money then maybe he is kept. The Braves have a lot of money right now and I firmly believe the payroll will be closer to 130 next year than 100.

I consider Hale to primarily be depth. I think Hursh and Sims are the most likely to take over in the rotation, but I think that there's a good chance Medlen and Beachy are brought back for simply depth purpose.

I'm happy about this move. I'm not a big Thomas fan.

As far as next year's rotation I could see us going with all young guys, and bring back Beachy and Medlen for depth/upside.

What has Northcraft (or any of the others) done that Hale hasn't? Hale has actually had some success in Atlanta. He's having a nice year right now, in fact.

so do you think they move Simmons into high leverage situations right away? Or use him like they did Thomas?

I think he'll be our seventh inning guy until Walden gets back. Varvaro was given a shot there against Boston and didn't get the job done.

Avilan will continue to be used in the 7th or 8th in certain situations.

I think the organization as a whole has a lot more faith with Simmons ability. Its actually surprising that he hasn't had more fanfare. The Braves have been successful in the past with these relievers with excellent numbers in the minor leagues (Kimbrel/Medlen/Beachy). Sure the latter two became starters but had a long stretch of reliving in their minor league careers. I believe they will use Simmons like a seventh inning guy. Similar to what Brad Lidge was a long time ago.

Nobody should mention Beachy or Medlen in the future rotation. It's safe to assume they will never pitch in a Braves uniform again.

Shae Simmons is electric and Thomas just wasn't ready to be at this level. Getting regular usage down in AAA will only help him moving forward.

I had not realized how dominant Simmons was at AA. The pen's weakness has been masked by starters going deep into games but I want not part of Carpenter in a critical situation in the playoffs. Hopefully Simmons can take the setup spot by that time.

If we're healthy come October Carp would be behind Walden, Venters, and Simmons at least. Not to mention I'm sure he would be behind Avilan.
