Trading Away a Starting Pitcher

Maybe Alex Wood should be traded? He's been rotting away in the bullpen for a month now. He rarely gets used and he clearly isn't a good fit coming out of the bullpen. It's obviously Harang and Floyd are sticking in the rotation.

The best bench piece Wren could get right now is a LHed hitting guy that can split time with CJ at 3B. And no, Pena is not that guy.

It doesn't really matter which of Santana/Harang/Floyd is traded away at the deadline. I would suggest Harang simply because he will not be given a QO, so his departure will not benefit the organization at all unless he is traded. Floyd and Santana could very well warrant a QO after this season, and the resulting draft pick will be more valuable than anything they could bring back in trade.

Diamondbacks might be willing to trade Eric Chavez.

I don't think it is obvious Harang and Floyd will continue to be preferred over Wood for the rotation. Wood was sent there because he has some experience in the pen. Floyd and Harang don't. And Fredi said it would be asking too much of Floyd to send him to the pen given he was just coming back from TJ. They wanted him to be in a routine he was used to. Plus there was the desire to limit Wood's innings. That would have meant 4-6 weeks in the pen for him regardless of circumstances. But the team also knows Wood has the talent to be a dominant starter. And his numbers as a starter last year and this year are significantly better than Floyd and Harang's. I would be surprised if Wood did not get put back in the rotation in the second half of the season.

You don't solve a short term problem by making a long term move.

Wood is in the pen for a distinct purpose. Long term, he is in the rotation plans while Harang is not, and Floyd/Santana are only maybe's.

I wanted Chavez for the bench all offseason. It looks like he has pretty much been used exclusively against RHed pitchers, and has responded with an OPS of .819 against them.

I just think it's counterproductive to essentially waste Alex Wood in the bullpen. He's arguably our most talented starting pitcher. If not he definitely is second. Now Harang and Floyd have not been awful either, but how much longer do "limit Alex's innings."

If he stays in the pen through the end of June that should ensure his innings won't exceed 170 during the regular season. I think that is the goal.

I remember Wren saying last year Alex could start in postseason if we needed him to. I'd imagine it's not different.
