Free Agent signings under Wren

We had no business signing BJ...I don't care what stat, analyst, or arm chair fan manager says..We had no business signing him.

As good of a strong opinionated post as this is..... You supply no facts to support your opinion . Plead your case? Minor league system stocked at the position? Trade candidates available? Had moveable pieces to get other options? Some Japanese team had an extra? Lay it out .

I wish we would throw some money at these big Cuban/Japan prospects personally.

Uggla and BJ are outliers. Neither have performed anywhere close to their career norms and both came here while in prime years. Both fell off drastically. When acquired they both were premium for their positions.

I was somewhat able to stomach last year's version of Uggla because he hit homers and drew walks. Now, even those skills have vanished. Amazing that he and his doppleganger in the AL, Jason Kubel, have fallen apart at the same time. Did someone cut off their PEDs?

Some of the latest Cuban guys weren't all that expensive and I believe they could handle most IF positions other than first. Would have been a smart insurance policy to Uggla and Lastella.

Yes and it is also the managers job to get those guys playing to their full potential. Their are several things that can be done. For instance. Remember when Andrew Jones went after a few balls with lackluster effort? Bobby benched his ass. What has happened when Bj has done that same thing. Nothing. When a guy is struggling at the plate you have to find the problem and fix it. Instead we keep trotting the same guys out everyday while they are still getting the same failure result. It took4 years of UGGLYNESS to go with a different 2nd baseman.

Ok, lets say it is not out of the managers hands because the guys just can't get it done anymore. Well now it is the managers responsibility to play someone that can get it done.

Like who? Schafer ?

Most the moves that turned out bad were at least understandable at the time. The bj signing was just baffling however. I swear I remember Wren saying he wanted hitters with a better approach and who would not give ABs away, and put up a fight at the plate. BJ is the opposite of that and the opposite of what this team needed. We needed a contact guy that could walk, and we signed a guy who Ks as much as anyone in the league and had a decent at best obp, and that's probably being too kind.

Wren has had some great under the radar signings, but the massive fails on big money contracts outweigh them. Overall though I'm happy with Wren as a GM.

Here's my case.

1. If you are expecting me to throw sabermetrics at you, close your butt cheeks, it ain't happening.

2. BJ has slugged over .500 once in his career. He averages about 160 Ks a season. He's hasn't batted over .250 since his 2007 season. Not to include he was brought in to man the most important position in the OF and he's failed miserably.

The front office knew what his #s were before signing and I supposed wanted to take a chance bc of his speed and his ability to steal bases. Did they think he'd be this bad? Of course not.

I'm not going to entertain what's in our farm system bc you fckn know there's nothing in our farm system. There were multiple ave that could have been taken pursuing Bourn more aggressive or band aiding CF for a season and make a push to sign Choo. This team settled on Lostman jr and it's hurting us. Stop drafting much pitching and go get some position players consistently.

And let's say that GM goes out and gets you the best CF on the FA mkt...would you approve of that move?

It all starts with the manager. He is the one that plays a guy that is barely hitting over 200 and doesn't hustle. If he benched his ass for that alone it may help with the other things. As far as going out and getting the best CF on the FA market. I don't care who it is, they would not be any worse.

The only blame I put on Fredi here is the fact that he keeps running him out into the 2 hole. It's not his fault that BJ is under performing. The only way BJ will get better is by playing.

I agree on the two hole but benching him him not hustling would send a message to him and others. Sometimes you have to not be their friend and be their damn coach.

He's 30 years old man. If he didn't get that message when Maddon benched him in Tampa or when Longoria got in his face, he prolly won't ever get it.
