MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

Two months of Andrew Miller has an expected surplus value of half a win. There are about 20 players in our minor league system worth that much or more. Let's get real.

By the way would anyone care to offer a link to the purported Gammons quote.

It seems to me in the past teams have often tried to bend the Braves over way more than other teams in these supposed trade discussions.

Unless it was that idiot in Arizona.

I had forgotten Lester was a FA this offseason. If he doesn't require a lot, I think we should strongly consider it.

Its really not true that teams ask for more from the braves, it's just that fans tend to value their own prospects higher.

Especially marginal prospects. We don't normally see what the other offers for a trade were so mostly people are talking out of their ass about these things. Looking back we bent other teams over in the Hudson, Bourn, infante, maholm, soriano, and both Renteria trades. Ironically the Uggla and McLouth deals were hailed for not giving up much and they both sucked.

I'm less bothered when we trade from areas of surplus. Sending Cory Rasmus for Scott Downs is an example of a trade where we let go of a player that wasn't quite as good as other similar prospects. Interestingly enough, we continue to have a bit of a surplus of RH pitchers at the upper levels of the minors. You have starters like Northcraft, Schlosser and Williams Perez, who I don't rate as highly as Hale, Sims, Hursh and Martin. Among the relievers it is a bit harder to establish a pecking order between guys like Jaime, Hoyt and Harper, but I'd be willing to let one of them go.

We also have an interesting group of middle infielders. I put Daniel Castro a bit ahead of Elmer Reyes, Gosselin and Pastornicky. So I wouldn't mind trading one of those three.

Of course, Peraza is an interesting middle infielder as well, but of a wholly different caliber. I'd put him strictly off limits.

Couple bits from a column Jayson Stark just wrote:

On Jon Lester (who does say the Braves are one of eight potential landing spots for him):

Atlanta Braves: The Braves have been telling teams they can't take on money. So the $4.5 million Lester still has coming this year might be an issue. But Lester does live in Sharpsburg, Ga., in the offseason and loves the area. So this is another team that makes sense -- on that level, at least.

Also:

The Red Sox, who have talked to Atlanta about Andrew Miller, were scouting Atlanta's Triple-A club in Gwinnett Valley the past few days. So feel free to file all that away.

I'd trade for Lester if we got a window to sign him to an extension.

Otherwise, useless.

Miller depends what we'd have to give for him, believe he's a FA at years end.

I heard him say it on MLBN earlier this afternoon. It was on the "Rundown."

Sorry I don't have a time stamp to give you.

I am sure the Braves have enough in the form of prospects to get Andrew Miller. The real issue is what Boston wants in return. If they want something over the top then Wren probably won't make a deal. Boston's asking price has to be high or else Miller would be on the Braves now.

You can thank Wren for ownership not wanting to spend more. If he didn't hand out two moronic contracts ownership might be more apt to open their checkbooks. Can't really blame ownership right now.

Ownership is who allowed him to hand out those ridiculous contracts in the first place.

Because current ownership was so generous before those?
I can't believe someone that isn't a moron actually believes the crap you say.

Being a contrarian/troll as an adult is embarrassing and nothing more.
Then again, I don't know if it's worse than actually believing it, thus making one a moron.
