Could Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd leave for Atlanta Braves? - The Denver Post

Patrick Saunders has the latest on the rumors of Dan O'Dowd joining his former boss John Hart as part of the new Braves front office, with several sources, including one with the Rockies indicating that it is a possibility. Perhaps not coincidentally, these O'Dowd rumblings seem to be going similarly to how things go when the Rockies trade a player away, so at this point I wouldn't be shocked at all to see his tenure with the Rockies end this winter.

The speculation began Monday when longtime — and well-connected — baseball writer Peter Gammons wrote about the Atlanta Braves decision to fire general manager Frank Wren.

Wrote Gammons: “Understand Hart’s historic front office baseball tree. Mark Shapiro, Dan O’Dowd (who could end up with the Braves in some capacity), Josh Byrnes, Paul DePodesta, Chris Antonetti, Ben Cherington, Jon Daniels, A.J. Preller and Jerry DiPoto are all John Hart guys. And probably more.”

Then, late Tuesday night, Yahoo Sports Jeff Passan reported that Braves president John Schuerholz has offered Hart the option of taking over the team’s GM duties full time. Hart, currently serving as the Braves’ interim GM, is reportedly mulling the offer.

Hart and O’Dowd have a good, long-term relationship, and a Rockies source said he “wouldn’t be shocked” to see O’Dowd leave Colorado for Atlanta.

(My take: this is via Peter Gammons, and much of his Braves stuff has been utterly wrong. Watch for Dave Nightengale's report)

I didn't realize that Hart's baseball progeny was so extensive.

Not sure on O'Dowd. Seems to be on the lower end of the recycled candidates.

This is what I don't get. Braves fans keep writing him off, but he's essentially a hall of fame GM with a legit protege waiting in the wings right here in Atlanta. I guess it's just that Braves fans want something new. This idea that he's a mediocre GM is absurd. Consider the circumstances when he was a GM. It's not black and white. He had legit success in both places he was GM despite the owner situation in Texas. He had what I would consider elite success in Cleveland. He also understand the modern game. John C. is a modern statistial guy, but probably needs help with the back slapping and the nuance of the business.

Are you talking Hart or O'Dowd? I would be fine with the choice of Hart, especially as a mentor to a GM-in-waiting. I'm just not that impressed with O'Dowd.

I haven't really seen anyone linking O'Dowd to the GM job. There has been speculation that he would joint John Hart in Atlanta if Hart were to take on the GM role.

Honestly, I've seen more linking Gerry Hunsicker to the job than O'Dowd at this point.

I think the most likely scenario is Hart as a mentoring GM to Coppolella with Dayton Moore the next most likely scenario.

Dayton wouldn't go for a demotion to be under somebody again, now that he's been in charge at Kansas City for the last 7 years.

Maybe O'Dowd will trade Tulowitzki and Gonzalez for BJ Upton before he comes over.

I love having Hart part of the organization. I'm just not sure I want him as the GM but would be fine with it. I think our ideal situation is promoting Coppy and having Hart groom him

The more I read about O'Dowd, the more I hope he's not the choice (and I'm a Christian, so it's not that per se).
