German gets rid of college tuition fees

Also, will all colleges being free mean that all educations will be equal? Will a degree from Harvard be equivalent to a degree from Simpleville Technical College? If no then why not? They're both free after all, right?

And who determines where I get to go to college? What if everyone wants to go to Yale or Harvard for free? Who are you or I to tell them that cant since it's free after all?

What about the teachers? Equal pay across the board whether or not you're a proffesor at Yale or some technical college? Why not? The tax payers would be the one's paying for it after all? So then why would I want to be a proffesor at Yale when some schmuck teacher at a tech college is making the same amount of pay as me?

Questions, questions, but no answers. I doubt there will be any answers to these questions. Just some side stepping by those who support it.

Free stuff sounds so good on the surface doesn't it?

It's certainly working quite well for Germany. They figured all of these questions out.
Private schools will still have the right to be private schools. No one is forcing them to be free, moron. You know nothing of what you're talking about.

No. They're not the same thing. Just like education and health care aren't the same thing. Yet I'm told we need to be paying for both. Hey, you need to be able to have reliable transportation to get to work or to school, we should subsidize that.

This is why we have public transportation.
Try and stay on topic.

So instead of helping my own child pay for college, I'd be helping everyone's child pay for college?

LOL I received not a dime from my parents for school. Less and less kids are receiving money from their parents. And costs keep blowing up.

I would gladly pay more in taxes if it meant my children could some day go to public universities at a much lower cost instead of being $30,000+ in debt before beginning their career.

So Yeezus is concerned about the debt of students, but not the debt of the country.

I came out with $40K in debt and have paid off all loans in 3 years. I worked during college and was paying off my loans while in school. My other friends didnt have the desire to do that, so they're stuck with massive compounding interest. Every bonus I have gotten from my job, has gone to my loan debt. It wasn't that hard to pay off. You just have to be willing to do it.

I think we should look at why the cost of tuition has raised so much. Not handouts for everyone that we can throw on the backs of tax payers. It's not like we're $17 trillion in debt or anything

Why should there be private schools? Why should only the rich be entitled to such schools? Do you hate poor people?

You insensitive bastard!

"We got rid of tuition fees because we do not want higher education which depends on the wealth of the parents"

So much for that right? If you only make some colleges free, the evil rich still have the advantage.

I hate stupid ****ing straw man arguments. Try and stay on topic and address the obviously enormous problem with our education system right now. It is crippling. It can't last. We're behind in the most important fields. Kids are coming out of school in tons of debt. Why should we not try and fix this? DAMN LIBERALS!!! You people are amazing.

So yes or no? Can't answer a simple question?

And this guy calls me a moron. Lol

It makes them even more idiotic to include international students in this. As if asking the tax payers to pay for all the German kids college isn't enough, they'll also be paying for other countries kids to go to college.

You consistently compare two things that are in no ways similar. And I also never said the amount of debt our country has isn't a problem. The two things are massively different and therefore not worth comparing.

Germans don't seem to mind, because it means good things for almost everyone.

You call something that they like and agree with idiotic, but not our system, that has student currently 1.2 trillion in debt and loans not being paid back. How old are you?

You're suggesting that the public fund their schooling, and don't see how it relates to national debt?

this country really is actually doomed

and it isn't the bull**** about saluting with a coffee in the presidents hands that fox news wants you to believe the reason to be

i mean, a good portion of people here and in this country are actually opposed to the idea of helping more people go to college and become more educated

You are incorrect about the second part of your post. I have no problem with people getting more educated. I encourage it. That doesn't mean I think it should be subsidized by everyone else.

You are correct about the first part of your post. This country is doomed because people don't give a **** about personal accountability anymore, and expect everything to be handed to them.

Hey, I can make stupid, nonsensical comparisons, too.
Why is everyone entitled to free protection from a police force? People should have to pay for their own.
Why is everyone entitled to have someone come and put out a fire in their house? You should have to hire a company to do that yourself. Hell, my house has never been on fire! #Liberals
Why are people entitled to have their kids go to public elementary and high school for free? Why don't they have to pay for that? I never even had kids...

These are just as reasonable as the crap being brought up. Education is extremely important in any 1st world country. There is a huge problem with our current system. Germany implemented a small fee a few years ago, instead of free the way it used to be. People didn't like it. And it was like a fraction of the cost of even our cheapest state school.

I'm actually surprised so many people are OK with our system of college. It is a huge problem, and again, not just because "people are too lazy!" That is such a tired, simplistic, and poor analysis of a complex situation.

I agree with some of what krgrwce or whatever said - people need to stop going to school for BS, easy majors. But that starts at the ground level. Some people I know, I don't think could survive as an engineering major, or even a nursing major, or aren't confident in the least they could handle it. We're behind in math and science, two of the biggest job fields, among other subjects. It doesn't help that some feel science is a lie and the devil, but I digress. I know too many people going to school for public relations, or sociology, because it is among the least challenging majors. However, these people back in the day didn't have it as bad. The value of a college degree is going down, while the cost of it is sky-rocketing. That's a problem. The jobs that were around 20,30 years ago aren't there now for a multitude of reasons. Young people don't have as many options as older people did at the same age. Things have changed, and something needs to be done.

America, where we thinking keeping people homeless is a better option

We should want as many people to be in houses as we can. It will make society better. It isn't rocket science

That is basically your argument for free college. Goldy's words with a slight twist. I just as easily applied it to free housing. You call it a straw man argument, I call it another question you liberals refuse to answer. There's a lot of that in this thread.

Like Democrats...errr liberals. More uneducated blacks given freebies = more votes for them.

Now in saying that public universities and technical colleges should be free, but their level of education just like Germany will be on the lower end as well, to educate workers. Private schools with better education and better teachers you can pay for yourself, like Ivy Leagues or similar schools. Oxford/Cambridge in England is the same. But also the private schools you must have the knowledge to be admitted, public institutions not. You don't pass your first year, you don't get a second, why waste tax payers time and money and if you want to continue, then you pay out of your pocket.

They do this in Germany and that is why their students take it seriously instead of partying 24/7 like our students do or take stupid classes to receive a worthless piece of paper, Bachelor of Sciences/Basketweaving. What are you going to do with that degree, make wicker baskets for the rest of your life? I believe the students who have more difficulty in school should go to technical colleges there first two years pass an exam before being admitted to higher public university and provided for free. This model gives you the necessary skills to get entry level jobs if you do not go any further and have no loans.

You see I can be fair but this is how the Germans, English and most of Europe schools run their education systems outside of them having the students pay for the private universities.
