Watching Kansas City play..

People are focusing on "speed" but there bullpen is what sets them apart. They are lights out with a lead past the 5th or 6th inning.

Think the Oreos are gonna be too much for them. There bullpen is almost as good.

Defense + bullpen + good starts + really unlikely patience and pop = 4 playoff wins in a row. That's not a good offense over there, by any measure.

Still, it's cool to see them advance.

It is tough for some to admit, but Dayton Moore has built a very good young team in Kansas City. Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer had down years this year, but both players have had 3+ WAR seasons and are 25 and 24 years of age respectively. Salvador Perez is 24, and he's probably the best young catcher in baseball right now. Lorenzo Cain is 28 and is coming off a 4.9 WAR season. This team is largely home grown as well.

I would say he lucked his way into this. First off the don't even make the playoffs if not for Bud adding a second wild card. They had 3 starting position players post a .295 or worse OBP. 5 at .318 or below. Moose Tacos has had a down 3 years with his batting average, obp, and power decreasing every year. Hosmer ' s best year was a .801 OPS. That's pretty mediocre for a 1b. I wouldn't call a .716 OPS much of a down year.

Perez is a good catcher, but he still posted a sub .300 OBP. Cain is injury prone and was an a slightly above average player this year and that's with gold glove defense. Swap divisions with the Braves and they don't even make the playoffs.

"Down years"? IMO those two "good" seasons they had were up years. Neither of them are all that good, and they were super high picks.
