Mississippi State, Bama, FSU, and then either Michigan state or Oregon if everyone wins out.

Although if ND can handle Arizona State and USC with ease, they'd have to be the second best one lose team next to 'Bama

In this case it would have to be Oregon since they beat Michigan State.

One other key item, Notre Dame. Basically, it isn't possible for Notre Dame to take the ACC's spot in the Orange, but it can take the other spot to play an ACC team. If the ACC champion is in the playoff, the next highest-ranked ACC team will go to the Orange as the host vs. the highest-ranked team on the board that didn't win its conference title. The Big Ten and SEC are guaranteed three appearances in the next eight Orange Bowls, but Notre Dame can appear up to two times.

Why can't ND take that Spot if FSU is in the playoffs? They'll be ranked higher than anyother ACC team?

These guys project duke vs ND in the Orange bowl. I can't see any big bowl wanting Duke since they probably won't draw at all

lol at the first poll that just came out.

Three teams from one division in the top four with FSU being the lone non SEC West team.

8th is about where I had the Spartans. I know these rankings will change a bit, but the typical SEC bias is in full effect.

Lol, so now the ranking committee has an SEC bias. Right.......

These rankings are going to change, but it's hard to argue the teams in the top 4 don't deserve to be there. And I would say the same thing if the Top 4 was FSU, Ms. St, TCU, and Oregon. There is a lot of parity among the 1 loss teams right now, but it will work itself out in the next 3-4 weeks.

Hmm lets think about that for a minute. ESPN airs the live rankings each week. ESPN is the SEC Network as well. It's pretty clear the committee will lean heavily for the SEC teams. Anyone who can't see this should quit watching sports all together.

As of right now, please state your case as to why the teams are not deserving of their current spot.

ESPN has as strong or stronger financial commitments to other conferences. What motivation would ESPN have to be biased towards SEC? Were they biased towards SEC before this season, when they had virtually no connection to the SEC other than like 1 game a week? Furthermore, what motivation would the playoff committee have to be biased towards the SEC? They don't work for ESPN.

Kirk Herkstreit has a good take on this.:

Scout.com: The College Football Playoff Rankings

By Rich Cirminiello

So far, so good.

Now that the initial College Football Playoff ranking has been released, my instant reaction is to let loose a giant exhale. Yeah, there’s a long way to go, but from top to bottom it’s abundantly evident that a ton of deep thought and debate went into each placement of the Top 25. How do I know this? Because there’s good common sense rationale on each rung of the ladder, which is what every fan of the sport is expecting from the committee.

Mississippi State and Florida State should be the top two teams. They are. The SEC is still the nation’s best conference. It’s reflected, with three of the top four teams and five of the top 11. Oregon and Alabama should be on the lip of the playoff cup, with control of their own destiny. They are. TCU and Kansas State out of the Big 12 deserve a ton of love for their unexpected starts. They’ve gotten it.

Ole Miss beat Alabama, and should be ahead of the Tide. It is. Gripes about ND at No. 10? Okay, but who’d you beat? The committee saw this, as well shaky performances against Purdue and Carolina, and properly dinged the Irish for them. The Big Ten has ground to make up. Affirmative.

This is simply a foundation on which the next six weeks of action will be stacked. It’s not perfect, but then again, perfection is a fruitless pursuit in a subjective exercise. At a minimum, there’s good solid logic behind the first rollout, and hopefully an openness from the committee to treat each poll and each weekend of matchups as a very fluid process.

Today’s a time to be relieved, even if you’re in the camp that believes three SEC teams in the if-the-season-ended-today playoff bracket is a sure-fire sign of the apocalypse. We’ve entrusted our sport, our passion, to a 12-person committee that’s still feeling its way through this complex process. If this first Top 25 is a harbinger of things to come, I feel a lot more confident than I did 24 hours ago that the committee gets it on a level that I get it. And that there’s a real good chance that the four most deserving schools will punch their tickets to the inaugural playoff a little over a month from now.

There’s a competence that was shown tonight that ought to allay some fears about the individual committee members and the process that they’re overseeing. The rest will be taken care of by the games and the players over the next six weekends … as it should.

1. Mississippi State

2. Florida State

3. Auburn

4. Ole Miss

5. Oregon

6. Alabama

7. TCU

8. Michigan State

9. Kansas State

10. Notre Dame

11. Georgia

12. Arizona

13. Baylor

14. Arizona State

15. Nebraska

16. Ohio State

17. Utah

18. Oklahoma

19. LSU

20. West Virginia

21. Clemson

22. UCLA

23. East Carolina

24. Duke

25. Louisville

I think they've got Notre Dame way too low. They're a no call on a pick play away from being in the top 2.

Other than that it's hard to gripe too much.

Marshall not being in there is a joke.

Who have the played?

You think any of the bottom of that list would have the same record as Marshall does if they had the same sked?

They can't help but play whoever is on their schedule. If VT refuses to play them this year, what is their choice? They are at worst a top 20 team and better than some teams in the top 20. Have you seen them play? I've watched them play in person. They are far better than last years team that beat ECU by 21 and Maryland by double digits.

F+/- rankings had them 16 last week, but moved to 22 this week. They have 32nd ranked offense, 24th ranked defense, and 27th ranked special teams.

At the very least they are better than Louisville, Miami, Arizona State, Baylor, UCLA, West Virginia, Duke (LOL).

Who had Duke played?

As of right now, please state your case as to why the teams are not deserving of their current spot.

Ole Miss is ahead of Alabama because they won head to head. I can agree using head to head to distinguish one team from another when their records are the same or at least the same number of losses. In this case each team has one loss. Why is this not the case when you look at Arizona/Oregon and TCU/Baylor? Oregon is seven spots ahead of an Arizona team who they lost to in Eugene. Both have one loss. Baylor beat TCU and yet TCU is six places ahead of them. Same number of losses here as well.

Also if MSU doesn't schedule Oregon this season and instead scheduled what 99 percent of power 5 schools do, they are ranked in the top 4 right now. However they didn't do that and they lost that game. I think the reward is far less than the penalty when scheduling non conference games. The committee doesn't care about non conference games apparently.

This playoff is going to make the schedules even more of a joke than they were before.

It's laughable that so many people are ****ting about this poll, especially on Oct. 29.

If you're a one-loss team, take care of your business, and you'll be in there. Only team that might get left out under that is Notre Dame. But with four teams, someone will get left out. I said from the beginning it should be a minimum of six teams, maximum of eight in the playoff. It may eventually be that in a few years. Anymore than eight would ruin it.

This is already mountains better than the BCS.

Who do you think are the most underachieving teams this season?

1) Oklahoma - Virtual cakewalk to the playoffs yet they've lost to much less talented teams
2) Georgia - Should have rolled through the SEC East this year. Every team is down in the East except Kentucky. Can't believe they lost to USC this season.
3) Ohio St - I know they lost their QB, but still Va Tech isn't even good this season. You've got to win at least your one borderline challenging game before you get to Mich. St.
4) Texas A&M - Got off to that great start yet it may turn out they are the 6th best team in the SEC West. Let that sink in for a minute. The Aggies are at best the 6th best team in the SEC West. No way they are the 6th best team in any other conference, much less division. But they had the easiest SEC east schedule after their South Carolina game and they've just had an unbelievable come apart.

But honestly, since this is a mainly southeast board, if I was a Georgia fan I'd be really pissed off right now.
