Autotune

Reading headlines about T-Pain doing an acoustic setting without his autotune and people have been dicks about it.

While I think that Autotuning has made people who don't deserve it money, T-Pain made a conscious decision to utilize an autotuner in a way similar to a guitarist utilizing a specific effect to develop a signature sound. Autotuning isn't something that's just done to make people who can't sing sound acceptable (see Spears, Britney) and it's overused in the hip hop genre. But T-Pain utilize autotune as an instrument is his choice to make. People shouldn't be dicks about it.

Grown ass men shouldn't be driving around listening to computerized black people yelling "OhhhhOOOHHHHoohhhhh". Leave that **** for high school girls.

I don't think autotune and guitar effects are similar at all. If there was a guitar effect that played the sound of the notes you missed, then they would be similar.

It's not my thing, but Iwon't rag people who like it.

And they're pretty similar. Distortion can cover up chord mistakes.

Dissimilar.

Plugging into protools to fix a mistake is like autotune but guitar effects are like mic effects (reverb, small hall, etc)

Well it's my fault for diverging from my original point, so I can't blame you for not getting it as I madea direct comparison to humor ESP. My point is that an artist can utilize an autotuner as an instrument, which is what T-pain does. It's not just a method for people who can't sing to pretend like they can.

Are you for real?

Your namesake here is the king of overusing it.

You're crazy.
He used in heavily in one album, that wasn't really "hip-hop," and a couple of other songs I wouldn't classify as hip-hop. He also doesn't use it to try and pretend he has a good voice, it just fits with the music sometimes. 808s is not really hip-hop, and it's a critically acclaimed album. I don't agree that he "overuses" it, and you'll have to point me to real hip-hop that does.

Maybe not everyone is as worried about being perceived as "manly" as you are. Not as insecure, maybe.

First lets throw out that real tag cause that's a qualifier that has no meaning. Would be like saying real rock bands don't make dance tracks, and then using that qualifier that can't be quantified to say Kiss isn't a real rock band.

But Weezy has used the **** out of Autotune, even if you opinion on West's use is wrong.

808s is not hip-hop. That's where he used it most. He's used it in a handful of songs outside of that album. If you consider a song like Guilt Trip to be "hip-hop" just because it's Kanye's song, then I can't help ya. Kanye's early albums don't use it once. Watch the Throne, Cruel Summer - not used.

When Wayne started using autotune he was a notorious joke. His early, good stuff it was never used once.
So I'll say it again, where is it "overused" in the genre? You cited two examples, and both of them are very weak.
Go on hiphopdx and tell me how many of the recent popular songs use autotune.

See that's the point I was making. Something doesn't make your case it's not real hip hop.

Weezy first dipped into Autotune in 2008 in The Carter III, which many consider his best work. So GTFO with your weak ass arguments.

But then again, I'm sure the songs he used it in weren't "real" hip hop.

Who the hell considers Carter III his best stuff? Are you insane? You truly have no idea what you're talking about, at all, if you believe people that like hip-hop consider that his best stuff. I have a ton of friends that have listened to him for a while and NONE of them would say that's his best, literally zero, it is FAR FAR FAR from it. I can tell you are not a fan of hip-hop, because you don't have any clue what you're talking about.

Is 808s hip-hop to you? Again, just because Ye made it, doesn't make it hip-hop. The album, by genre definitions, is not hip-hop.
And you've STILL only used two weak ass examples to how it's "overused." If it were "overused" you'd be able to pull out a lot more examples rather than two head scratchers.

I could post the statement that "many people consider carter III to be wayne's best work" on a hip-hop forum and got banned, maybe shot, because it's that stupid.

I could pull more examples, but it's not worth my time, because you'll say it's not "real" hip hop. Because in reality what you consider "real" hip hop is stuff you like, ignoring entire swaths of the genre. I mean I could be a dick and say real hip hop died in the 80s and now it's just a commercialized bastardization of something that used to have heart and meaning so no real hip hop has autotune since it wasn't invented until 96 or so.

And many people consider the Carter III his best album. It's a fact, look online read what people say, just cause you disagree with their opinions doesn't mean that they don't have it. I'm glad your friends agree with you congratulations, I didn't realize your clique of white dudes with strong opinions constituted the entirety of hip hop's fanbase. Seriously stop talking out of your ass, it's making you look like one.

And I never said 808s was hip hop, it's probably closer to R&B if you were to paint with a broad stroke, but in reality it's somewhere in between. Kanye didn't stop using it then either. I'm not gonna even both cause I'm sure you'll say that it's not real hip hop. Or cause it was a singer on his track it doesn't matter, even if he was the producer and there for called for it's use. It's pointless "discussing" this with you because you've already clearly made your point, nothing you like uses autotune (or you don't think it does) and therefore no real hip hop uses it. Cause if you don't like it, it isn't real.

You have yet to demonstrate how autotune is overused in the genre. You gave two artists with 1 album that uses autotune. Kanye uses it in just a handful of songs after 808s, same with Wayne after Carter III. Please list more? If there are so many examples it should take two seconds each to think and list them.

The argument that hip-hop died in the 80s is just retarded. I don't even get the point of bringing that up or addressing it. You're trying to sound like you know the genre well when you don't. You just further prove you have no clue what you're talking about. Classic classic absolute classic albums came out in the 90s. Kanye has put out multiple classics and has redefined the genre. Just stop with your nonsense. But please do provide these plentiful examples of over usage.
