Yoan Moncada

LaStella move made to add arms, but more likely to add international bonus money to spend.

Maybe not on Moncada, but certainly targeting someone they like.

Heyward has already shown to be somewhat injury prone. Is it really that crazy to assume be might not age all that well?
 
The LaStella trade closes the door on Moncada for the Braves. Whoever signs Moncada will go way over the $ limit and pay the penalty. The Braves wouldn't be trading for additional slot bonuses if they were planning to exceed the limit.

Having an extra 830K in slot money reduces a potential tax penalty by 830K. So that slot money is worth twice its nominal value to a team that is subject to the tax.

Ah, I see your point. Good call. I still think it's doubtful the Braves pursue Moncada seriously. My understanding is that you have to sit out of international signing for two years if you incur the penalty, and that would be at odds with the Braves recent emphasis on beefing up their international scouting staff. Also, they probably need more of a volume approach to signing in their current state as compared to a team like the Cubs.
 
I'm not an accountant, but I think the Braves could sign Moncada for around $30M (plus a tax penalty of around 29M) and prorate it over a seven year period (assuming one year in the minors and 6 years under team control). So they would be effectively paying 8-9M/year spread out over seven years. They would be subject to restrictions on what they could do with their international slot money the next two signing periods. This could lead them to trade most of that (the way the Cubs just did with us) and maybe recoup close to $4M over that period. Given the kind of prospect that Moncada appears to be, signing him for 30M (plus the 29M penalty) appears to be a good investment. Something in the 20M range would be a steal.
 
Heyward has missed at least some time due to injury every single season but one that he has been in the majors. And he missed a little time in the minors due to injury as well. Regardless of the "flukieness" of some of the injuries, it is still a major red flag when someone this young misses over 120 games due to injury through his first 5 seasons

The last and only season he has missed significant time that wasnt due to a fluke injury was in 2011. And if you remove his flukey 2013, then he's still averaged 150 games a season for his career.

He's not injury prone.

I agree but I don't believe the Braves will go that way.
 
The one angle that would redeem the Heyward trade in my eyes would be if the salary saved turned out to be the difference that allowed us to sign Moncada.
 
DOB seems to indicate we will be players in the INTL market very soon, but he doubted it would be this year. I would think the moves we have made of late would indicate we should be getting involved sooner, rather than late.r
 
The trades come one at a time, but the Heyward deal wasn't the only one. The international market is worlds more affordable than the free-agent market. Not saying it WILL happen, but how quickly would folks around here change their tunes if Upton and Carpenter were shipped to the Rangers for Gallo and Nick Williams and the Braves spent the money on Lester and Moncada? All of a sudden the 2017 season looks like...

The big improvements we've made recently in our international scouting department don't necessarily mean that they're for way off in the future - these guys are all much more familiar with guys like Moncada and Tomas and if they're convinced they legitimately have Heyward/Upton upsides within a couple years, it makes all the sense in the world to stockpile the pitching to go with them when they're ready.
 
We're now at 90M payroll after dropping Heyward and Walden. So if we shift 20M from the major league budget (which John Hart indicated would be around 110M), then we can make a serious bid for Moncada. The reports suggest he can play any outfield spot including center, plus second and third.
