Braves Trade Heyward, Walden to Cardinals for Miller and Tyrell Jenkins

I thought I remember reports that they offered Heyward the same deal that was offered to Freeman this past offsesaon. Is that not accurate ?

I don't recall that. I remember Wren saying they wanted to go short-term with Jason because they wanted to give him a chance to demonstrate his full value (or something to that rough effect).

Some of these Hart quotes... just irks me that much more:

So Hart thinks he got us a #3 or 4 starter. Well done, sir!!

Read the full quote. Hart said the Braves view him as a future front of the rotation starter but currently sits in the 3 or 4 spot.

I heard this deal while at work and I about raged all over the place. BUT, I've gotten time to sit down and think about it and I've come to a null conclusion. My love for Jason Heyward blinds this for me a little bit, I won't lie. I look at him as being a legit .300/.380 25 HR, 30 Steal, 80+ RBI threat... but, he really hasn't been that since coming here and there's no telling he will become that. If anyone can "fix" him, per say, it'll be the Cardinals.

I also don't understand the negativity around Shelby Miller. He's a career 3.33 pitcher with a fantastic rookie campaign and a very solid sophomore year... moreover the second half. He's a number 2-3 starter at the worst and a TOR guy at his best... our rotation looks much better and we have opportunities to keep it coming as the offseason progresses. Teheran, Miller, Minor, Wood, Hale/Floyd/Meds... whoever they pick.

The offense isn't good. It's awful. BUT, I won't say anything until I see how they plug the holes. Could be decent?

Thats what Wren said, wait after the 2014 year then pick up talks that winter and welp.

Heyward is lying by omission. What Heyward meant to say was "my agent never told me the braves wanted to discuss a long term deal". The discussion went like this...

Hart - "Hi (Jason's agents name), we would like to disucss a long term contract to keep Jason in Atlanta long term"

Jasons agent - "Great, starting point is 10 years 250 million. "

Hart - "Yeah, no thanks"

$180M for Heyward and that's a discount? Geez he's overvalued here.

And when he's paid more than that next offseason (or, Xenu forbid, this offseason by St Louis), you'll say he was overvalued by that team as well.

So you don't know Heyward's agent's name, but you're privy to the intimate details of Hart's supposed discussions with said agent?

Well what if Heyward was giving them mix signals and they couldn't take the risk of losing him at the end of this year?

Then you say "Based on our conversations, we didn't feel we were going to be able to come to terms."

Not what he did say - which was basically:

"I'm not sure if he wanted to stay or not, so we covered our asses and found a team willing to give us their 6th best pitcher for him."

Dude, Mike Stanton just got $325MM. Jacoby Ellsbury got $169MM last year (at age 30).

Contracts are going up, up, up. Baseball is a boomin' business.

Big bull market! Get rich quick!

Have you even really looked at Jason's stats the past 2+ years? If it wasn't for his defense, he'd be a platoon player... and you're really trying to put him in the same statement as Mike Stanton?

heyward has five full seasons and his fifth was worse than his fourth which was worse than his third which was worse than his first.

if miller is still going backward in five years, then you'll have an equal comparison.

Miller has been sliding for the past 3 years, more or less, and he's one year younger than Jason.

An equal comparison starts with comparing players that play the same position, anyways.

Well he's only had 2 real seasons in the MLB so there's your first error. Don't know how you could say he's been sliding for 3 years when a little over a year ago he was a ROY candidate with an ERA around 3.00, 15 wins, and a K/9 innings of 8+

Question that's been biting at me since this trade went down: is this the first time we've openly, unabashedly re-built with no intention of competing in the upcoming season since we started the run in 1991? We were pretty bad in 2006 and 2008, and mediocre in 2007 and 2009, but my memory is that we were trying to win in all of those years. That's right, right?

It's an odd mindset, knowing that an entire season has already been dismissed in mid-November. I suppose this is what my Kansas City friends dealt with for 30 years.
