OFF-SEASON ROSTER MOVES THREAD

From BA:

Atlanta Braves
Signed: RHP Sugar Ray Marimon, LHP Greg Smith, C Eli Whiteside (elected free agency from Cubs, Sept. 29), C Jose Yepez (re-signed), 1B Seth Loman (re-signed), 2B Emerson Landoni (re-signed), OF Cedric Hunter (re-signed)

The Braves typically strike early on the minor league free agent market, and they did so again in 2014 by importing Sugar Ray Marimon, who throws a low-90s fastball and a curveball with depth, from the Royals along with veterans Greg Smith and Eli Whiteside. Among the players Atlanta re-signed, Seth Loman and Cedric Hunter provided power at Double-A Mississippi and ranked second and third, respectively, in the system with 14 and 12 home runs in 2014.

Good to see we held on to Cedric Hunter...and without having to use up a spot on the 40-man roster. I also like the Greg Smith signing.

He would not be the first Atlanta Brave named Zoilo!

You are correct sir.

No mention of the Donnie Veal signing here. Minor league signing that I like. Big LHP. Has good, but not great, splits against LHH. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the mix for the big club if McDowell can help him hone his game a bit.

The Angels have inked left-hander Atahualpa Severino to a minor league pact, according to a tweet from MLB.com’s Mike DiGiovanna. Severino, 30, spent last year at Triple-A for the Braves. He has yet to make it back to the bigs since a brief cameo with the Nationals back in 2011.
Orioles signed Gwinnett SS Ozzie Martinez to a minor league contract. He began 2014 playing for the Dodgers' AA club in Chattanooga and has MLB experience with the Marlins.

Minor league FA signed by the Braves that I haven't seen posted yet include righty Victor Mateo (formerly of the Rays), a control-oriented starter with a nice changeup and lefty Francisco Rondon (Yankees) is a sinker/slider reliever with Triple-A experience.

SS Sean Kazmar has been re-signed for Braves to a minor league deal.

Big 40-man roster tuneup announced Wednesday.

Jonny Venters, Ramiro Pena DFA. Venters may re-up as he rehabs. Not expected to pitch at all in 2015.

Newly placed on the 40-man: Mauricio Cabrera, Williams Perez, Kyle Kubitza, Tyrell Jenkins, Yean Carlos Gil, Brandon Cunniff, and Jose Peraza.

A big chunk of the Gwinnett team has been signed. Braves annouced that first baseman Travis Mattair and righties Justin Jackson, Jairo Heredia, and Jake Brigham are all under contract.

Mattair, 6-5, 210, R/R also can play third. Former Phillies' 2nd round pick, but has been mucking around the mid-minors for the Reds of late. In 2014, .239-13-69 for Class AA Pensacola with a breezy 133 Ks.
Hoping this Justin Jackson is the former Toronto No. 1 pick who converted to pitching last year, not the Marlins prospect who went from 8-1 to an 11.00 ERA in indy ball. Either one is a reach, however.
Heredia was a swing man in the Yankees system with a ton of strikeouts. Isn't that where Blakely came from?
Jake Brigham, I thought was a character in Major League. Turns out he a guy who can give you a guided tour of the Rangers' farm system over the last decade. Lotsa stops.

Braves have finally released Trenton Moses, a promising hitter in 2013 who screwed up his career with a skiing accident that cost him all of 2014.

Add minor league signings 2B Corban Joseph, who was just cut loose by the Yankees; and international guys INF German Alonso; RHP Jhoniel Sepulveda.

FYI: Orioles sign former prospect lefty Ronan Pacheco out of indy league; Phillies sign Paul Clemens, cut by Astros after coming in Bourn trade, and OF-P-Buttofjokes Jeff Francoeur.

Damn, Jeff. You made some good money. Time to go home.

If you loved the game that much, you should have spent some time figuring out what was and wasn't a strike.

Or when to run on the base paths. I don't think I've ever been more p*ssed at a player as the time Francoeur loped home with the winning run during a game relatively late in his tenure as a Brave. Bases were loaded and the hitter (who I can't remember) hit a screamer toward 3B that the third baseman could only knock down, making it impossible to make a play at 1B. So Jeff thinks, "Game over" and starts jogging home. All the other Braves' players understand that a force is in order, so they are running like nobody's business. Third baseman recognizes a bit too late that Francouer's head is well up his a** and makes an awkward throw home. If the throw is made a split second sooner or is on line, Francoeur is forced out at the plate. He gets home expecting a celebration and out of the dugout come a bunch of guys yelling at him and he's like "What'd I do?" I always found his puppy dog exuberance refreshing, but he just never learned how to play. One of those guys who was blessed with quite a bit of athletic ability who never bothered with nuance.

No one posted it here, only elsewhere:

Pena accepts outright assignment to Gwinnett after being DFA.

For the sake of continuity, posting moves here: Medlen, Beachy, Schlosser all non-tendered by Braves. Lowers 40-man roster total to 37.

Markakis makes it 38, Johnson makes it 39.

Cory Gearrin has signed minor league deal with Giants.

Braves have signed international outfield K.D. Kang. Don't know anything about him, but he sounds badass.

A product of Parkview High School (alma mater of Jeff Francouer, Jeff Keppinger, and Clint Sammons, among others).

Not quite as international as I thought. Keep me honest boys and girls.
