Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

The kid has been in pro ball for FIVE years -only played in FOUR of those years (didn't play this past year)- how can we judge anyone based on statistics in only FOUR years of pro ball (minors and majors)????

Yeah, I know. It's thanksgiving, I'm bored, and I wanted to see if Zito would write a treatise on it.

We'd be exceeding our quotient of curaçaoans, also.

I love the curacaoan contingent. JJ, Druw, and Tron? The impressively named Didi Gregorius? Sign the whole island, as far as I'm concerned.

Trade for Profar and Gregorius - Towers left the D-Backs with about six middle infielders, none of whom can hit - play one at second and the other in center. Platoon Gosselin with CJ at third. Sign any swinging dick to play left and lets go win our 85.

Nelson Cruz and #Mariners agree 4 years/$57 million, report dominican newsspaper

Feck. That hurts the Upton market a bit.

Well they might still be in the market for Upton. Cruz will serve as their DH, adding Upton to the OF would be a huge upgrade to their offense.

I'm sure they would REALLY like Upton now. Might need to revisit and see if they blow the Braves away with an offer.

Steal? For Cruz and his agents you mean?

Projection systems put Cruz around 1-1.5 WAR next season.. they will be paying him $14.25 M when he's 37 years old-- and unlikely to be of ANY value (offensively or defensively). Even now he's in the red defensively. If he follows a normal aging curve, he's expected to put up something between 3.5-4.5 WAR over the course of his contract. So the Mariners are spending anywhere between $10-11M per win to upwards of $20m per win. AND they get the added bonus of giving up the 21st pick in next year's draft to sign him.

He'll be additive to their offense as a DH next year, sure, but it's hardly a steal.

I think they will go for Upton now. They can taste it! Upton/Minor/Gattis for Saunders/Ackley and Walker. Would you do it?? Although, with Cruz, Gattis is probably off the table.

If they are going to push for a playoff spot now, then Upton for Walker certainly makes a lot of sense for them. Gattis could make sense for them if they want him to split time at DH and C with Cruz splitting time between DH and LF.

But like I was saying days ago...the time to trade JUp was right after the Tomas signing. Now the best trade partner for Upton has already started to fill the RHed power need. The window for getting max trade value for JUp is closing now. Hart better extend him or trade him this week.

Mariners still *need* another outfield bat, but I am told it is questionable whether they will spend prospects/money to upgrade further.

The #Mariners deal with Cruz likely takes them out of the Justin Upton talks with #Braves

Could all just be a negotiating ploy, though.

I still say they'd want Upton. I'd be fine with extending him but if your gonna trade him then they better get to it. The Mariners may not wanna part with Walker at all.

One of the best fits for him, so that could suck. Hope it encourages Hart to try to keep him.

While I doubt they add another high priced bat (notice Cruz is making exactly the same amount as JUp), they could still be in on Gattis since he is so cheap and could split time between DH/C/1B (nobody but Hart is going to actually play Gattis in LF).

The window for getting max value for JUp is closing. Now Hart absolutely must trade him or risk losing JUp for nothing more than the 30th pick in the 2016 draft after using him in 2015 as the cleanup hitter for an 80 win team. I have a bad feeling Hart is bungling this "rebuild", and will hand the GM job to Coppy just in time for the Braves to be terrible for a very long time.
