Braves sniffing around on Markakis; Official 4 years 44 million.

He is a good defender, not elite/GG but he isnt average.

I guess every stat in the world saying he is a poor defender must not be true then. Range is more important than any other ability for an outfielder. Can you cut balls off in the gap or track them down. Arm and actual fielding ability come nowhere close to range. And Markakis has lost all of his.

I would say I've watched him on a semi-regular basis... along with the Royals, the Orioles are the other AL team I casually root for and I watch a game every now and then since I have MLBTV

So how many singles have you seen him turn into doubles?

Understatement of the year.

With that in place, if Justin is traded, your lineup is something like....

Gosselin
Simmons
Freddie
Gattis
Markakis
CJ
BJ
Bethancourt.

Vomit and **** Hart if that's what we get.

I dont blame him on either if Justin is dealt.

You cant let Heyward go for nothing.

Personally i'd keep Justin this year and try to compete.

Not talking about the Heyward trade, but if you're trading him and Justin, you have to get something offensively. And I mean someone a little better than Markakis.

Have you seen him play on a regular basis? Why do you think it's above average?

I will admit to only seeing him play rarely. However, thought it would be useful to point out that he did have the 4th best UZR / 150 among qualified RFers last year. In a larger sample though, he appears to be more of an average RF as opposed to above average. These defensive stats are imperfect as many have rightfully pointed out, but it provides at least somewhat of a measuring stick.

Sure but who?

Headley?

We've supposedly got a hard-on for building for 2017 and beyond. A 31-year-old RF doesn't really seem to fit with that. Acquiring a young, nice hitting prospect might.

Idk how much Headley would cost, but yeah, I'd take him over CJ.

What in the world did you all expect? Who else was going to play RF once the Braves missed out on Tomas?

The Braves can't afford to pay Heyward $25M per year. Period.

The Braves do NOT have an OF prospect that even belong in a MLB starting lineup. Period.

The Braves CAN afford to pay Markakis $11M per year. Those are the facts. Seriously, what other kind of move did any of you expect for RF?

They obviously have a deal lined up to trade JUp or Gattis, so they absolutely needed a corner OFer. They paid a reasonable price for a competent one that can hit in the top half of the lineup.

"Competent" is all the Braves can really afford...

Look fellas (and zito) we ain't rebuilding. Fredi ain't stickin around for a rebuilding phase. He's here to win now.

While true that's a one year sample and nothing close to what he's done in the previous 5 years. And defensive stats are best looked at in a 3 year window.

Only fans and talking heads have spread the school of thought we were building for 2017... the FO has never eluded to that.

Although like I said, I don't mind Markakis all that much, might have been better to find someone like Aoki or bring in a younger developing bat in a Justin or Gattis trade. Then pony up money for Lester because if Markakis is batting in the heart of our order next year, we might need a historically good starting rotation.

I think the Braves can afford to pay Heyward 25 million a year. They just don't think he's worth it. Clearly the FO doesn't believe in advanced defensive metrics. So with that understanding these moves makes sense. Doesn't mean I (and others) have to like it.

Then if they are intent on Gattis playing left field if he's on the roster, where does Justin Upton go? And if Justin is traded, who do we put in the lineup that can do what he does?

We damn sure aren't going to be better than last year trading most of our offense.
