What happened to JR Graham?
Two lost years due to shoulder problems.
Mauricio Cabrera is another highly rated pitching prospect who has been set back by injuries.
Attrition is brutal for pitching prospects. My rough rule of thumb is you lose a prospect per level of advancement. So if you start with 5 good starting pitching prospects in low A, only four will retain that status upon reaching high A, and only three of those will still be prospects in AA and only two in AAA and only one of those will be a successful major league starter. When you see things in that context you realize how bad the situation in Rome was last year.
Looking ahead to next year, I think things will improve a bit. We'll have the following guys who are still to be regarded as genuine prospects (have a ceiling better than a 5th starter) by level:
AAA Hursh
AA Sims, Parsons, Jenkins
High A Cabrera (unless converted to the pen), Gil, Diaz
Low A Grosser, Povse, Sobotka, maybe Fulenchek
We are still a bit short of what our goals should be (2 in AAA, 3 in AA, 4 in high A and 5 in low A) but it is going to be better than the situation last year.
