Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

Agreed on both accounts. Rios is entering his age 34 season and coming off a bad year. I think Steamer (0.7 WAR) and ZIPS (0.9 WAR) are a bit optimistic on what he'll do next year. I like Markakis better over the next couple years than Rios for sure, but that 4th year on Nick is real tough for me.

More teams are starting to realize that the risk is in the length of the contracts and those that have the flexibility to do so are choosing to pay a high AAV for fewer years.

According to all the sources I have read the Braves are willing to take less in return for Justin from teams willing to take CJ. But no one wants him after his terrible season when also considering his contract and how bad he is defensively at third. The only way he is traded at this point is in a package deal or for another similar contract player another team wants to move.

The best match seems the Giants and they recently balked at the idea. Hopefully now that Headley and Lowrie are signed teams rethink that position.

May be some sort of CJ for Infants swap perhaps? CJ could be the platoon partner for Moose Tacos. Infante is super sub again, playing 2b til Peraza is ready.

San Fran and Baltimore have both been gutted offensively. They need to move if they are going to be players.

Morse signing helped as well. That could create addl demand for Gattis.

Padres signed a starter this morning. I believe his name is Morrow. Precursor to a trade that has them moving someone in their rotation?

There was also a blurb about them being "open" to having Josh Johnson come back.

I'd imagine we're going to hear they gave in and will include Ross in the next little while.

Mixed feelings about Ross, but would like him in our rotation enough. It's the other moving pieces that intrigue me.

Morrow is a bit of a reclamation project, he has talent but is ALWAYS hurt. Probably more depth than anything.

Like Dalyn said. His home/road splits are pretty huge. However he wasn't terrible on the road. The kid has figured it out and will be fine moving forward. He is eligible for arbitration at the end of the upcoming season and free agency in 2018.

Yeah I don't think this necessarily means the fathers are trading a starting pitcher. Perhaps mid season if Morrow is healthy then they might spin a starting pitcher.

There are no guarantees, but I think it would be very surprising if the Padres don't trade from their SP depth for a bat.

- Barring injury or trade, these 4 have a spot locked down: Cashner, Ross, Kennedy, Morrow
- Then they have 3 other guys who are MLB ready and accumulated some starts for them last year: Despaigne, Hahn, Erlin
- They have a top prospect who they'd probably like to start in AAA but will be ready to contribute this year: Wisler
- And they're still flirting with the idea of signing Josh Johnson.

So that's 7 - 9 SPs right there. Now they certainly could acquire someone other than Upton (Matt Joyce, Allen Craig, Marlon Byrd, etc.), but I think they'll trade for a bat.

Agreed, but I do think having Melky, Rios, and Morse come off the board within the last 48 hours has signaled to everyone interested that IF Justin or Gattis are going to be moved that that time is now upon us - if Hart hasn't told them so directly. Time to put your cards on the table if you want one of them.

The Morrow signing and Johnson chatter at least hints that Preller's looking to shore up options in the event he moves someone.
