Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

What if we also get a strong season out of Justin that helps the team get into the playoffs. That plus the draft would seem to be a pretty good outcome.

Look my preference is to keep Justin long term but we know that's not going to happen. I just don't see this team competing with the Nats and Marlins.

With Bethancourt, Simmons, CJ, and BJ all in the lineup together we're not making the playoffs. Trade Justin. But I'm hoping the Seattle rumors are about Justin.

So looking like the Padres and Mariners are out on Upton. That leaves possibly the Orioles, Rangers, Cubs, Giants as remaining options?

I am just ready for this to be overwith. Once Justin is traded we should known 95% of what our team will look like going forward.

We arent making the playoffs, just trade him.

Padres have a lot of irons in the fire: in addition to Myers & #Rays they are still checking in on Upton & #Braves. Preller being aggressive

@TBTimes_Rays
#Padres apparently exploring several options. Hearing that nothing with #Rays and Myers is close enough for a deal to get done tonight

And the Royals were not going to the world series last year. Predicting baseball is hard yo.

Not really.

NL playoffs next year: Cards, Dodgers, Nats win divisions, Marlins and Cubs as WC's.

Then you have teams like the Giants, Mets, Brewers, Pirates who are all easily better than us as well.

I think Justin and Varvaro are about to be traded, but unfortunately I have a bad feeling we are not going to like the return.

If it turns out that the Padres and Mariners fill their need elsewhere, we may have missed the apex of Justin's trade value.

@JeffPassan
Sources: Significant optimism that Wil Myers to San Diego gets done. Said to be very close. @Ken_Rosenthal first mentioned the trade talks.

@jcrasnick
The intrepid @RyanDivish says he thinks #mariners will announce a trade in next 2-3 days. I know they're working on it.

My sense is it's a RH bat and someone who hasn't been mentioned in a ton of #mariners speculation. That's all I got.

Yep. As I said before I've been very nervous hearing about the demands from Hart for Upton. We now have two more of our biggest options off the list. Hart may have put us in a really poor position by demanding so much and forcing all our possible trade partners to go in another direction. Now there's a chance we go through a losing season with only getting a draft pick or settle for lesser offer because few teams are bidding on him

Here's the thing with J Up. Teams are still incentivized to trade for him in this offseason because during the season they will lose the right to draft pick consolation if he bounces.

And new teams will emerge as suitors mid season if he stays. Remember, Beltran got Zach Wheeler and Boston got Cespedes for Lester. Both of those were half year rentals. It's only December. Be patient. I much rather Hart hold onto Upton then trade him for nothing.

Is it a foregone conclusion he cannot be re signed? I know not likely...

Lower the price and add Chris Johnson as a compromise IMO

If both the Padres and Mariners are out on Justin, now or soon, then that leaves only the Giants and a mystery team (O's?) from the most recent list of teams interested.

This possibilty and the recent reports that we're dropping our asking price on Justin are concerning. I would hope Hart and co. stick to their guns and not backtrack to the point of taking a disappointing return. But the way this off-season is going so far I'm almost expecting to be disappointed one way or another.

Agreed. A team could also lose a big bat in spring training to injury allowing for us to cash in on Justin. If we take a disappointing return now and that happens...
