I really think we needed this type of trade. We got one player with really high upside and another three players who are all very young with varying levels of upside. I think the real beauty of this deal is the options it allows is to have.
Our farm system was completely barren save Perazz, who is close, Sims, and Davidson, who aren't close. Other than poor financial flexibly we had no trading flexibility. Now this trade opens up possibilities of trading Fried and or Jenkins after they establish they are healthy, which would substantially increase theit value in comparison to what it is now. Or allow us to trade one or potentially two of Wood, Miller, Teheran, or Minor if our preference in the future is for one or two of Jenkins and Fried.
Similar with Peterson. He allows flexibility with himself or Perazza to be traded. The other Peterson and Smith are two prospects that are capable of substantially increasing their trade value based on their current plus hitting(Peterson) and plus plus speed(Smith). By the 2016 offseason one or both of these guys could be ready to play or be substantial pieces in a future deal.
This is not just about projecting future WAR, which I am a fan of. We have to take in to consideration future trade value which had a decent chance of improving regardless if they play well at the MLB or not.
Finally, for those who are saying this trade might not be worth the draft compensation; I suppose perhaps it's true, it certainly was when Texeria turned into Trout. That being said, I personally prefer what we got in this trade compared to our ENTIRE 2013 draft.
