Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

BenBadler

Good chance the 2016 draft pick the Padres can get when Justin Upton leaves ends up better than any of the prospects they traded to Atlanta

Ouch. We got a bunch of spare parts.

That isnt true.

And we should have kept them, miss the playoffs, and watch both walk to big markets for nothing but a comp-pick?

These were moves that had to be done, the returns werent great but for 1-yr of control, not bad.

Should have kept them, and acquire better pieces to put around them at 2B, 3B and CF and make a run this year with the same core of guys that just won 95 games 2 years ago.

All this time setting it all up and Renfroe or Liriano weren't part of the return? There isn't a single healthy prospect with impact potential in the entire package.

This is absolutely terrible. Now the Braves will suck in 2015 and STILL suck once these guys are ready to "contribute".

Expecting Walker++ was wishful thinking, this was a move that needed to be done.

I dont love the move but understand why they did it.

That isnt true.

It is true. I've looked at this carefully. The expected surplus value of a pick in the 30-35 range is about 1.5 WAR. None of the guys we got from San Diego will be in BA's upcoming Top 100. That includes Fried. I do think Fried at this point is close in value to the draft pick. But not higher in value.

Think about it this way: If Fried had gone to college and had had the TJ surgery his sophomore year and then sat out his junior year, would he picked in the 30-35 range in next year's draft. I doubt it. We have seen some TJ surgery guys (Rondon and Hoffman last year) get drafted in the first round. But I think their stuff and performance before the TJ surgery was superior to what Fried had shown in the minors before he got hurt.

Easier said than done when 1/3, that's right 1/3 of your projected payroll is invested in dead weight in Uggla, BJ, and CJ.

Fried is in the Top 100 actually. And there is no way Fried would have been available if not for the injury.

So no, it isn't true.

Spend the money on what, exactly? The only decent option I see left is Aoki, and while he would have been a nice piece to patch into the club before the Heyward/JUp trades, he sure as hell isn't going to make any difference now.

Let me put it this way...

The Braves will have a top 5 pick in the next draft.

Would be fine with that making our pick protected to make a run at a big name FA next winter but our pitching will keep them in alot of games.

Whether that translates to wins is another story.

Uggla's money is gone after this year.

BJ yeah, but get rid of CJ. Should've packaged him with Gattis in a trade.

We had money from Santana (if Liberty would let us keep that influx).

I have a hard time believing Hart didn't before hand have better offers than this. It seems like they just took the best offer that was left after most teams filled their needs elsewhere. Plus we didn't even at least dump CJ's contract in the trade.

If they put in CJ, the return is less.

Better to trade him and just get his deal off the books

No money and no prospects. And they had to find 2 SP. Pretty much impossible to improve the club with what we had available to do it with.

The better question is what does Hart do with the extra money?

Payroll is just under 90 right now.

Moncada?

Even still, there is no way the pick they get for Justin is more valuable than what we got.

Yes it isnt a great trade but no way is a draft pick better than this.

Northcraft is more than I expected to see as the second player.

Me too. But really, guys like Northcraft, Jace Peterson, Justin Peterson, Smith all have pretty low probabilities of having an impact as a major league player. This is not to say they are worthless. But if you had a group of about 20 such players, maybe one would turn into a player of value.

So about Dustin Peterson...Reports on him were: "Scouts believe Dustin is more advanced than D.J. was at the same age, and he might end up being more athletic, as well. He has a short, compact swing and a good feel for hitting. His excellent bat speed means he should develop solid power as he fills out. -MLB.com"

Now lets say that is close to true or comes to fruition...as one of the people who wanted DJ, I'd be more than happy with the potential of this deal.
