Braves sign Pierzynski

As a team and if we lose Gattis, I don't think we hit 70 homers collectively as a team. Heck no one will hit 20 and even Simba might lead the team and that is a scary thought.

Final $ on Pierzynski. Not bad at all. Braves are taking a chance w/ his personality to be sure, but it's possible he could light a fire under Bethancourt.

@BNightengale
AJ Pierznyski will earn a $2 million salary w $700,000 in incentives w #Braves in what could be final year of fabulous career

Because as we saw this year just making the 1 game WC game is an at best scenario. Glad to see that the Royals and Giants season ended in that game.

We're the Braves, the baseball gods hate us.

We cant be lucky like those 2, as well as the Cardinals.

So what's the point of even having a team then? If we are the Braves and the baseball gods hate us and we can't be 'lucky' then what's the point? Even if we have the best team in baseball we'd just get bounced in the first round by the wild card winner.

As opposed to being terrible now and for the forseeable future?

Who says we will be terrible now or the foreseeable future?

We added quite a bit of talent in the Upton and Heyward trades. Argue about the quality of that Talent all you want, but we have really strengthened the farm in a matter of weeks. Also, I don't think people realize that we STILL have a lot of talent on this team, particularly in the rotation. A lot of ways to skin a cat. May be Sietzer earns his pay check, gets Simmons back on track and gets Upton to not be so much of the sucking vortex that he is.

Damn, we have 1 hitter on the team and you **** on him.

Well does he "screams" dangerous to you. He had pretty pedestrian numbers, 280 ish average, teens in homers, mid .800 OPS and strikes out a lot and he is getting 20 mil +.

It looks like a Bill Buckner type of player minus the k's.

The Assellstine/Office/Burroughs/Montanez/Frias days are coming back and soon. Our offense is going to absolutely suck and it sucked last year, but this year might make us literally gag. YNOT is going to be interesting that is for sure.

Who says we will be terrible? Anyone that realistically looks at the team. The farm is still below average as well.

We may have 1 above average hitter for his position (and slightly above at that, in Freeman). If Gattis is still on the team, that may make 2; however his defense will be a big problem.

The pitching should be ok, but you don't win many with the worst offense in the league; even if the pitching is great. (pitching should be good, not great)

Are you going to really expect 80 wins? 75?

I wouldn't call his numbers pretty pedestrian.

They don't scream elite either, .286, 18 and 78 with 145 k's and only what .840 OPS. The only thing that was decent was his OPS+.

Ho hum numbers to me. Now with no protection if Gattis gets traded, it will get worse.

840 OPS right now is equivalent to a low 900 OPS 10 years ago. When the scoring environemnt lowers you have to adjust what you think is good offensively when going by raw numbers. Freeman also has a really good walk rate. His OPS+ and WRC+ numbers are good. He's a very good offensive player.

I agree. 7th highest OPS among first basemen (with 100 or more games) in all of baseball. 4th in the NL.

Freeman also played every day (literally, Freeman played in all 162 games) and that clearly hurt his numbers IMO. He seemed to be suffering from fatigue off and on too much in the second half. Fredi of course still never gave him any off days. Also, before someone says well Freeman wanted to play so don't question Fredi here. I know that about Freeman but so does many players. It is still the managers job to make sure the players get the needed off days for rest.

k, I promote him to Mark Grace territory, you happy? LOL

or John Olerud even.

Still not in Votto's league and with the same paycheck.

I expect the same results, every year.

30 100 .300 .900 for a 20+ mil player.

Votto had a much worse year and is injured and only getting older. He'll be 39-40 before his contract is up. Freeman had a much better year and played every game and is young and healthy and will be 31 (at the edge of his prime) when his contract is up (and he will still be making several million less than a 37-38 (at that time) Votto).

As for those numbers you threw out for a 20+ mil player. Two players in all of baseball managed that last year.
