2015 NFL Draft

Given the play of Schraeder late last year and the non-option of cutting Baker yet, I think the Falcons may hold til the 3rd to go for an OT.

I think they have to take a DE in the first round, even if it's a bit of a stretch pick. THat's far and away their biggest weakness on the team is that they can't get to the passer. IMO they should draft and if they can sign someone great they should. I love Biermann as a role player who moves around in all kinds of looks and he was for sure their best DE last year but he isn't a starter. Looking at available FAs on the DL a few names pop up. Suh, Fairley, JPP, Hardy, anyone of those 4 could be massive for Atlanta. I'd prefer JPP/Hardy as edge men, since we signed fatties last year, but if you have a shot at Suh, you take it, Scumbag or not he's a beast in the middle and that has a ton of value.

Lets say Atlanta gets Hardy who could be had for cheaper cause of his off-field issues and he sticks around and they draft Shane Ray or Dante Fowler. THey've drastically changed their pass rush and everythign else on the team changes with it.

On paper, and Atlanta defense of

Hardy
Jackson
Soliai
Fowler

Is a strong DL especially when you consider the depth behind them with Biermann, Babs, Peters, and Hageman all presenting different strengths. On say third and short you can put Fowler on the bench and bring in the big man Babs. On 3rd and long you can put Biermann in for a DT to play a who knows role (rush 3 and let him spy if it's a running QB, have him run stunts with the DE, drop him into coverage, etc.) Peters is a fatty who can come in for runnign downs. And Hageman probably breaks into a starting role soon, but he would be your passing down DT for sure if he's coming off the bench.

LBs will be harder to figure out. I can't imagine they stick with their permanent nickel formation again, I just can't imagine it. I'm guessing Spoon on the outside, Worrilow in the middle and Shembo on the outside. I also think they take a LB in the second round who's more versatile. Kid from Penn State (forget his name) intrigues me if he's there.

CB you have Tru and Alford who'll be amazing with a passrush

Safety you're fine at with Moore and Southward/Ishmael.

Falcons first 3 picks assuming the value is good should be

1. Pass rusher
2. Linebacker
3. OT.

I'm less concerned about OT than I was a few months ago because Schraeder did a heck of a job. And if Baker is healthy he will be fine as well.

Assuming the cost is fine, they should re-sign Spoon, Biermann, Carimi Bryant, Quizz, Peters, McClain, Antone Smith, Mike Johnson, Cliff Matthews, Josh Wilson, Javier Arenas, and Dwight Lowery. Well probably not both Wilson and Arenas but one of them. And again, as long as it isn't cost prohibitive. First they have to extend Julio, whatever that means happening. If they can keep julio, then keep their depth and add an impact player in FA, the Falcons will be good going into next year. This year massive injuries, a terrible start to the OL (injuries) and a horrific pass rush were their biggest issues. THey have to address the passrush as injuries isn't something you can plan for.

I'd probably cut Jackson. restructure Blalock, trade Harry Douglas for a 3 if you can get it, or for a pick next year that's like a 4 that could become a 2 depending on performance or something like tha.t Cut Hawley or Konz. Stone was good enough that we don't need both of them. Jackson I think can be good, but I dont 'think he's about 4 million dollars better than Freeman/Quizz/Smith. I think that hydra will do quite well.

NFL Draft Insider Tony Pauline passes along "word from the Senior Bowl" that the Falcons like Missouri OLB Shane Ray "a lot."

Not shocked at all. Only concern I have with Ray is will the Skins take him. I think if he falls past the Skins he's the Falcons. as I dont' see the Jets or Bears taking him. Best case scenario is Gregory is there so the skins take him, and then Ray falls to Atlanta. I'd take Gregory of course I just can't see him falling out of the top 5.

Skins would be stupid to take him. A) I don't think hes 5th best prospect and we already have Murphy and Kerrigan.

No. I wouldn't mind it bc I am a believer in drafting for value and not need, but I think 5 is a spot for one of those offensive lineman. Clemmings is jumping up my board.

I agree with that philosophy, but I am of the opinion that this is a really weak year for offensive line talent. I think the skins trade back if that's what they focus on.

If they trade back and still get Scherff or Clemmings, I will be very happy. I heard Clemmings measurables at the senior bowl will have him shooting up the draft board.

Any chance Washington trades up for a QB? Mariota at 2?

No, they'll give RG3 another year.

They have way too many other needs.

Wont ever happen but Foles for RG3 makes sense with Philly giving some picks/players.
