Braves sign RHP Todd Coffey to Minor League Deal

It's a combination.

It's a minor league deal. Along with some other minor league deals. They're largely inconsequential. I don't see how that can be construed as desperate. It's not like we gave him $5MM to be our #4 hitter.

It feels desperate to me. That's true whether it feels desperate to you or not.

I guess Coffey will not be competing for a spot on the 25-man roster, as he was not invited to MLB spring training.

@DOBrienAJC

#Braves signed RHR Todd Coffey, 34, to minor league deal, no ST invite. Had 1.93 ERA in Triple-A after missing '13 season for 2nd TJ surgery

@DOBrienAJC

I just tweeted "no ST invite" RT @RVABraves06: @DOBrienAJC please clarify: ST invite or no? conflicting reports

I'd say that's because you're already upset about this off-season. I believe you feel that way, but I think it's objectively not at all desperate. We aren't relying on him. It's a freakin minor league deal. There is no risk involved. It means nothing. It's easy to pile on I suppose, but that doesn't change the fact that this is inconsequential.

OMG DESPERATE MUCH

It's a combination. What part of that don't you understand? It's the THOUGHT behind the signing(s) that's desperate.

Because there's absolutely nothing desperate about signing dozens of ailing/old pitchers in the faint hope that you can trade one of them.

Maybe the operative word here should be delusional.

Exactly.

What is the true number of old pitchers, three? To minor league deals? With the possibility that one of them rebounds while you're not competing anyway? Er, yeah, ok. We have plenty of young pitching in the rotation and in the 'pen. You guys are just upset about the offseason. I get it. But these moves don't really mean anything. I'd love for you to describe why this even matters, or why it's a bad thing. It just doesn't matter.

I mean, over the course of one week we signed Matt Capps, Jose Veras and Todd Coffey. It's not an objectively meaningful thing, but it's hard for me not to read that sentence and wince a little.

When are we gonna wake up and smell the coffee and bring back Don Wengert? Man I loved that guy. Scott Kaminiecki would be another good one. There's a Hart connection there...

Speaking of Hart connections....would love to be able to bring in Chad Ogea. Our good pal Paul Assenmacher. What about Alan Embree......YEAH baby! Back to Chad Ogea, man that guy was so good....he had his hands on the 1997 World Series MVP if it wasn't for Jose Mesa. Bring him in for a tryout. That brings back memories of another connection, Jaret Wright. But back to Chad Ogea, the guy could be our cleanup hitter this Year. YES problem solved. Jim Poole? Mike Jackson was a stud, be a good influence on Jenkins for sure. Bob Wickman, both Hart and JS got glowing remarks on him. Speaking of good remarks, I betcha John Rocker's got a season or 2 left under his belt. BOOYAH. And how could I forget Albie Lopez. Biggest waste of 4 million dollars for sure. Brian Anderson was good. Erik Plunk could still "plunk" someone. Ah yes...Kent Mercker! Guy threw a no hitter. El Presentite I bet he can still get it done. Always wanted Paul Shuey. And there's high upside with guys like Steve Karsay. Steve Reed would be fine. JS had a huge crush on Danny Graves. Dave Burba is an ace. Tom Martin was good. Mark Whiten can pitch if needed. Dave Riske had a great arm. Chuck Finley, Justin Speier, and Tim Drew could be the missing pieces down the stretch.

The people who have a problem with this obviously haven't accepted that the team is rebuilding, won't compete this year or next and has a target set for "hopefully" being good in 2017. It's not like the Braves are going to be running any of these guys out there in the 8th inning of a 2-1 game with the Division on the line.

If the Braves can find some use out of 1-2 of these guys and: 1. Save service time for a real prospect who actually may have a future with the Braves 2. Could possibly be traded for something useful - prospects, international bonus money, cash, anything then it's been good money well spent.

It's not desperation when you accept that the goal is 2017 and not 2015. It's calculated.

My only complaint is that they haven't made enough similar moves with hitters. I would have liked to see Corey Hart get a shot in LF. Is he done? Maybe. Maybe even probably. But, what if he came in and hit .280 with 10 HR before the All-Star break playing on an incentive driven contract. Do you think that would actually be worth something?

Think about this: In the next few weeks some team is going to pay close to $80M (40 in bonus and contract and another 40 penalty) to sign a Cuban infielder who has never had an at bat in professional baseball. Teams are paying based on potential. The Braves have signed a bunch of guys who actually have had some success as professionals, but at very low cost, based on the potential that they might get one who returns to form.

C'est le bingo.

It's not three pages of complaints. It's several legitimate complaints, several half-assed complaints, complaints about the complaints and quite a few fat jokes.

The fat jokes are all recycled. It really was funny back during the days of Terry Forster. That even got Letterman's attention.

If it's so taxing to read these threads, maybe you should get some fresh air, or do something else that gives you fulfillment and pleasure, like pointing out other peoples' flaws or telling kids that there's no Santa Claus.
