Braves sign RHP Todd Coffey to Minor League Deal

Speaking of fat jokes, check out DOB unwittingly getting in on the action. Regarding Coffey not getting a Spring Training invite:

@DOBrienAJC ·
Only so many innings to pitch in ST games, and space in clubhouse RT @n8ote: @GortAnalytics @DOBrienAJC What is reason behind non ST invite?

Look, we are just going to trade him for prospects at the deadline anyways. Same with Johnson, Grilli, Capps, Kohn, Rodriguez, Outman, Wang, Veras, Stults, etc. It's a brilliant ploy. Fix and flip. Like the show. We're going to have sooooo many prospects.

Don't you get it?

What could possibly go wrong? Somebody has gotta pan out. How could this be a bad move in any way?

This team is re-build-ing -- a truly calculated endeavor.

Godspeed John, godspeed. I'm with ya buddy.

Yep, no doubt, I have no reservations at all that this (rebuilding) is exactly what was and is needed. The only thing I think that most are missing out in the process, is that we are going to win the WS all the while rebuilding at the same time. It's unheard of but Hart is gonna pull it off.

Is that before or after he pulls the rabbit out of his hat? :)

How long has DOB been covering baseball? Does he think the only way the Braves determine performance for assembling the roster is from the "regular" spring training games? Heck, there's a ton of split-squad games, "B" games, minor league scrimmages and the like that will provide the decision-makers with more than enough information to know who should go North in the short term. There will likely be a ton of roster turnover during the season and my guess is a lot of the recent signees with major league experience will end up in Gwinnett.

I am very confident in the John Hart rebuild ™; a viewing of Hot Tub Time Machine, foremostly, followed trading ****ty players for guys that some day may be less ****ty, topped off with a health dose of what he likes to call 'operating room robbery'. That John Hart, whatta guy, an inspiration ... going places no GM has ever been before, blazing new trails ... a true pioneer.

Actually I have reason to believe the only reason is we are bringing in all of these guys is it takes a lot of grown dudes to get Mark Bowman under control when he's in rage mode and feasting endlessly. Braves buffet is over budget (and has been for some time, I hear it was one of the large downfalls of the Wren era). Only way to get it under wrap is the way Hart is going about it. Whether or not it works or not is yet to be seen, as Bowman might just go Jeffrey Dommer on them all.

It dawned on me that some of these TJSs may be the result of repetitive motion stress caused by the shoveling and subsequent ingestion of mass quantities of food stuffs.

If it's so taxing to read these threads, maybe you should get some fresh air, or do something else that gives you fulfillment and pleasure, like pointing out other peoples' flaws or telling kids that there's no Santa Claus.

You can always choose to ignore these comments too. It's not as if nobody dishes at this forum, right?

.@Nationals sign RHP Heath Bell, 2B Dan Uggla, 11 others to Minor League deals with invites to @MLB #SpringTraining: http://atmlb.com/1Agh3CY

omg desperate or what??

What is the true number of old pitchers, three? To minor league deals? With the possibility that one of them rebounds while you're not competing anyway? Er, yeah, ok. We have plenty of young pitching in the rotation and in the 'pen. You guys are just upset about the offseason. I get it. But these moves don't really mean anything. I'd love for you to describe why this even matters, or why it's a bad thing. It just doesn't matter.

Pretty much.

Hawk, Dalyn and a few others who i wont name clearly hate the new FO.

Signing some pitchers to minor league deals hoping to flip them at the deadline is fine given the direction the Braves are in right now.

Yes. You have to hate a FO to see when they make questionable, bad, or desperate moves. Sure. With the recent news about Simmons, it confirms the desperate feel. They are scrambling to find potential depth for the bullpen. That explains it perfectly.

OMG.

Rationale?

That's only for ignorant suckers, you know.

Simmons, yeah.

Or they could be signing veterans so they dont have to start the arb-clock of some of the youngsters they have.

Heyward, JUp had to be traded if neither would extend, not going over that again.

Gattis was a great deal, his value would stink once he gets hurt again playing LF if we went that way.

No one is talking about Heyward, Upton, or Gattis in this thread except you.

But in light of the news of Simmons does it make their moves irrational? Even if you believe its desperate it seems to make sense to me and has sound logic.

Who said it didn't? All I said was that it was starting to feel desperate.

Given the latest signings (namely the Veras signing) was a reaction to losing Simmons, it really isn't surprising that such moves "feel desperate." These type of reactionary signings after a key loss usually do.

Note: I am not disagreeing with you. I am just saying it seems some are overreacting to your "starting to feel desperate" comment.

Fine.

How is signing Veras, desperate when we needed a RP. Most teams in all sports do that after injuries, it's common sense.

Markakis was desperate after trading Heyward.

Signing Aoki to a 1-2 year deal and flipping him at the deadline would have been better but thats another story.
