Spring Training 2015

Split squad games are brutal, but our pitching should be better than this.

Cody Martin w/ three scoreless innings: 1H, 1BB, 3K.

I think he has a shot at this thing, but you can bet that Hart / Coppy will also be on the prowl for a Harang-type at the end of Spring Training.

Some notable facts about Friday's pitching:

In 13-2 loss to Mets:

Banuelos: 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 WP, 1 K, 5 ER
Aviilan allowed final Banuelos run
Avilan 1 IP (failed to finish 2nD) 3 H, 1 BB, 2 R, 1 ER
Jaime 0.2 IP, 1H, 4 BB
Vizcaino 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 1 ER, 3 K (ESCAPED bases loaded jam, 0 R)
Cunniff 1 P, 0 H, 1 K (0.00 thuis spring)

12-2 loss to DET

Folty: 5 R, 1 ER
Russell 2 IP, 0 H
Martin 3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
Sims 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER

Folty's line also included 3 H and 2 BB too.

I am not ruling out another Harang-type end of ST signing, but this time we basically did that in advance by signing multiple veterans to minor league deals with ST invites (namely Wandy and Stults). Personally, I like the Wandy pick-up best just so long as he's healthy. Speaking of Harang, MLBTR reports: "Meanwhile, Zolecki adds that offseason signee Aaron Harang was scratched from his upcoming start due to lower back discomfort. Manager Ryne Sandberg said he’s not worried and called it a “muscular thing,” but this is the second time Harang has been scratched for a back issue this spring. The Phillies will need a healthy Harang given their thin rotation depth. The veteran signed a one-year, $5MM contract with Philadelphia this offseason."

Martin is going to be a beast. Hope it's with us.

Falling tide grounds all boats.

I don't see the need for another signing with Wandy and Stultz.

I am not sure there will be anyone available that is better than the options we already have, esp. given the injuries so far. MLBTR noted that teams will likely look at Wandy, Stults and maybe Wang depending on whether they make the team.

Like Ruiz, Mallex Smith and Jason Hursh are among today's cuts.

My comments: I know Smith wasn't going the make the team but I've enjoyed watching him play. He has hit and looked the best among our CF options too.

I wonder why Brandon Cunniff isn't talked about more than he is as far as consideration for our pen. His minor league career ERA is a stellar 1.74 and he pitched in 33 games for Mississippi last year to a 2.05 ERA.

He probably isn't talked about as a candidate more due to there not being many openings in the bullpen barring injury. The Braves haven't ruled him out and obviously believe he may contribute in the Majors at some point. That's why they added him to the 40-man roster this off-season. Lefty Brady Feigl has really impressed so far, and has looked the best among our lefty bullpen options IMO, but he's also a long shot too. We got both out of Ind. ball so if they both turn out to be solid MLB relievers that would be nice for us.

I think I've seen just about enough of Avilan.

I liked Avilan fine before Fredi broke him, now I am surprised that his arm is still attached to his body. But I am not surprised when he struggles at all (not that his ST numbers are bad so far, just saying).

That said, I could still see Avilan traded before the season starts should a good offer come along.

Good start by Wandy tonight, sounded like he had Altuve struckout but still got him out after the missed call, then he got both Grossman and Gattis no problem too. He struck out Gattis to end the inning. He seemed to be hitting 90 mph mostly with his fastball, hit 91 mph once too.

Braves have something going now, EY Jr. hit one off the pitchers glove and beat it out (ruled a hit), then Jace Peterson singled making it first and third. Now Simmons is up.

Simmons hard hit ball ball that gets past the shortstop (ruled a hit) scoring EY Jr. and Peterson goes to third. Bethancourt then follows with a sac-fly on a deep fly ball that scores Peterson.

2-0 Braves early.

Wandy should've had a strikeout on Carter (second time a missed call cost him a K today it seems) but Grossman tries to catch the Braves napping while upset about the call only to be gunned down at third easy by Bethancourt for the third out. Braves still lead 2-0 in the third inning and fat boy won't be happy...
