Spring Training 2015

Foupr shutout innings from Miller today is a big positive bump for me. Likewise, Simmons' bat, Bethancourt's play and Young in CF. The Braves will not be the worst team in the West, and I'm betting they'll be close to a wild card when it's all said and done.

Won't make it, though. But this year, close counts!

I think there have definitely been some things in ST so far this year that could potentially change the ceiling of this team for the current year. But, can't get too excited just off of two weeks of ST.

If Andrelton gets the Seitzer gospel, C-Bet hits at all, and Peterson doesn't turn into a pumpkin against real pitching, I think that ceiling is a little higher, for sure. Our 4-5 starters are going to be a wild card, likewise our current cast of thousands in the OF.

Jace actually can give us a bit of reason to expect some offense. He hit pretty well last year in AAA and there was that article mentioning that players with his minor league statistics typically tend to translate well to the major league level. And he passes the eye test as well with his smooth quick hands and athleticism.

So maybe he can get out there and post a .260/.330/.400 line while playing good defense and being a plus on the base paths. To me that seems like a reasonable line from him with potential that he could do even better than that. That maybe gives us a 2 WAR player at a very low cost. But of course that's all dependent on Fredi actually letting him start.

I read where Fredi was going to "run he and Simmons out there as much as possible" this spring to see what we got, but who knows.

I think the Braves have every intention of starting Jace at second base. I think its a very reasonable scenario where the Braves end up getting fair value back for the Heyward/Upton deals with just Miller/Jace.

Anything else out of the other players is going to be gravy.

Fredi better play Jace at leadoff and EY Jr. in the 8th place... but that probably won't happen. Best scenario would be Jace leadoff and Eury in the 2 hole. Perez has hit lefties and righties this spring... is super fast... and a better/younger hitter. Perez needs to be given a MLB shot.

I'm not as high on Bethancourt and Simmons right now. Bethancourt is still swinging at everything. I guess the one thing you can say about Simmons is just that he has such incredible hand-eye coordination that it's possible that he pulls a Terry Pendleton eventually. I think the chances of that happening this year is a bit of hopeful thinking.

Bethancourt will likely continue to improve his power, just based on his body type. But right now I wouldn't expect much more than JP Arencibia type numbers from him at best once that power develops. And I don't think that power is there yet.

No, but they can do it when called for. The Braves have not been able to do that for a long time. Even in the glory years, the Braves were not built to be successful in night in, night out close games. We didn't just get unlucky 13 times in the playoffs. The biggest factor was lack of team speed and a refusal to situation hit when the opprotunity was there.

Its amazing that every fanbase in baseball thinks this is true about their team.

I wouldn't be shocked if Peterson puts up a higher WAR than Upton this year if Fredi actually starts him most games. I think defensively Peterson is much more valuable than Upton. Upton is a negative defensively and Peterson looks like he's going to be comfortably in the positive.

I think you are drunk.
