WalMart, Target, TJ Maxx raise min wage

Vets are giving incredible resources once they are out of the military. Its a shame many of them do not utilize them.

I don't think it's fair to shame someone because of what kind of job they have. Maybe they don't want to feel dependent on the system. Maybe they are gun shy because they think they may have PTSD or a number of other potential issues. Maybe they have those issues. Maybe where they live there just isn't crap available. Lots of vets become homeless and it isn't because companies won't hire them, there's a deeper issue and shaming someone isn't the way to address it.

Well, if he doesn't someone else will cater to them.

Why would they need to since there's already Walmart and Target. The idea that there isn't retail places that pay employees is funny. I know a lot of retail employees who make 6 figures. The idea that you can't make money and pay people is farcical.

It doesn't sell clothes or other items, does it? If so, it's not the neighborhood grocer I'm talking about.

Yeah, it doesn't sell the other stuff. Forgot about that. Goes to show how often I'm in a real walmart. No sporting good either. It is just food, paper products, and pharmacy I believe.

The skillset it takes to work on the Target floor is awfully low. It was the go to job for my fellow high school mates since they paid $6 per hour as opposed to min. wage of $5.25. Because there are minimal gains for hiring overqualified workers to stand in an aisle at Target, it makes little to no sense to pay them much higher than minimum wage. They could essentially hire trained monkeys to do their job.

I don't think you read my post. I'm not talking about Target or Walmart, though their customer service is universally panned, people keep going there because they like cheap ****. Part of what makes **** cheap is terrible service. But again, goldfly never said he'd run Walmart.

Goldie doesn't have the brains to run Wal-Mart, but believes they should pay employees $15 an hour while keeping prices dirt cheap and everyone going home and singing Kumbyay.

What are the chances those people that work at Wal-Mart etc spend that $15 / hour at ---- Wal-Mart etc

A rising tide lifts all boats

I heard (from a source that may or may not be entirely reliable) that the federal government 'subsidizes' Wal-Mart to the tune of almost $1 trillion dollars.

All the more reason why they should pay $15 min wage.

Subsidizes in preferred vender status -- overseas commissary etc ??

No, as in welfare dollars (food stamps, etc.) paid out to Wal-Mart employees going back into Wal-Mart stores.

THat didn't have anything to do with krg's comment and goldfly's response, so I'm gonna strike that from the record.

You are a veteran, you should not be working at Walmart.

Do you not have a vets facility in your area to point to better paying positions that will use your experience? Unless you were infantry and train to kill, police departments are always looking for vets without PTDS.

It's not that easy unfortunately. I looked into employment centers and such shortly after I got out, but no luck. I was a cavalry scout which is essentially infantry, but it's a little more complex. I have no desire to have a job in security or as a police officer for instance. Walmart was part time when I started back into school. I am still in school, but just recently got a department manager position. So this isn't going to be my career, but the time being I will ride it out. It's my safety net right now because after I get married in May, we are heading back to Minnesota/Wisconsin to look for a house. We plan on moving in the fall, so a transfer to a new Walmart is my plan.

I am in Eau Claire, so look me up. I wish you had a CDL, you would be hired on the spot.

whatever you want to believe

i don't think prices should be dirt cheap.

and again, to quote myself from earlier

but thanks for trying to state what my thoughts are on what i would do etc

My point was that a CEO who picks market level wagers over cutbacks would be an ex-CEO tomorrow.

So, and correct me if I'm misunderstanding you, a CEO who paid his people what the market called for, for any given positions in his/her company, rather than getting them for as dirt cheap as possible, would not have a job as CEO for very long?
