Spring Training 2015

Not necessarily disputing your point, but the HR was windblown.

I'm not saying the guy is suddenly destroying everything. Just saying he has shown more pop this spring than in the past. Getting it high enough for the wind to have any effect whatsoever is no mean feat for Mr. Young.

I wonder if with the D'Backs outfield crunch if they'd consider dealing Ender Inciarte and what the cost might be? He had 23 DRS in only around 900 innings last year and showed great range in CF too. I'd at least give them a call as he's got very good speed and has a lot more potential with the bat than EY Jr. too. We could still keep EY Jr. for some time in left field and that would give us a very good outfield defense and more speed too.

This is his second time hitting a HR in spring. The first came in 2012, which also happens to be the only good year he ever really had in the majors.

I think Young deserves a chance to start the season as the opening day starter. If you tell someone it's an open competition and then they perform well in spring training and you don't give them the job what message are you sending to them and the team? If he starts to struggle you can always go with someone else but he's had a great spring, let him start the year with the job.

This is similar to my thoughts regarding Martin. It's time to give him a chance. He's more than earned it.

I've thought about him too, '76. He would be a great add, but it would probably be costly. It looks like he still has minor league options and has < 1 year of service time. So, good chance they would rather send him to AAA versus trade him. Cody Ross - or maybe Trumbo - is probably who they'd want to trade from that logjam.

I agree, just would be a nice add and give us a CFer with the range to help out those that lack it on the corners. He also seems to have a pretty good arm too. I think he had 15 assists between the minors or Majors last year (10 assists in the Majors).

It was also a good piece of hitting. He turned on and inside pitch and hit a line drive. The announcers mentioned it was wind aided and maybe it was but at worst he would have gotten a double. It wasn't a pop up that just kept carrying and carrying. He hit the ball hard.

I haven't watched every game this spring that's been on TV but every game I've watched he's been impressive. Maybe it won't transition over to the regular season but he's played well in the month of March.

He's had a good spring, and those of us who don't want to see him start can admit that. Most of us, anyway.

Hell, I'm one of the ones who didn't want him to start. I think it was going to happen regardless, so I'm glad he's having a fantastic spring. Now it's not such a bitter pill to swallow.

Isn't he a two time gold glove winner?

Palmiero won a gold glove and played like 15 games that year. Gold gloves are given out for things like reputation, if you breakout as a surprise hitter, fielding percentage, and other things that rarely show if you are a great fielder or not.

So Heyward won his off reputation? Maddux won 18 because he had Maddux on his jersey?

Yep, but at least he's been more deserving than others awarded them in the past. Rafael Palmeiro won the first base Gold Glove in 1999, though he played 128 games as a DH and just 28 at first base.

No doubt it's a flawed system. Like David Wright won it that year over Chipper after having twice as many errors as Chipper had...but they most certainly get it right the majority of the time. IE: Simmons
