Braves in talks with DBacks for Trevor Cahill

OK this would be a good deal if the following happens:

CJ and Cody Martin traded to DBacks for Cahill and a reliever
Cahill then flipped with a lower level prospect (and possibly cash as well) for Jackie Bradley Jr.

Frees up money and nets us JBJ

I'd rather have Martin than Cahill or Bradley.

I don't think anybody on here has really snowballed Cahill as a pitcher, recognizing the talent that still might be unearthed/brought back to life there. But the $6MM commitment is iffy, even if the prospects surrendered are menial.

Still hoping that there are other components to the deal that even out things.

6 million commitment for 1 year. Money that would otherwise simply be pocketed by liberty media. If it upgrades the team and doesn't cost any prospects of relevance, I don't see a downside.

Hawk I respect your opinion about all things Baseball. What do you see the downside is of paying Cahill $6MM?

I would be fine with the risk if it paid off in 2016 if he turned it around. Unfortunately, it won't (unless he has a good first half and is traded at the deadline). This is basically just another perfect fit for the Mukaki Rebuild.

Well said. I think iffy is an appropriate word. $6m for Cahill is not cause for a freak-out, you just hope you can do a little better than that since the D-Backs are pretty desperate to move him.

Assuming we don't give up anything good prospect-wise for Cahill at 6 million, it's a great low-risk move. Hart will most likely cut either Wandy or Stults, you are only paying Cahill a net 4 million this year. Therefore I think Cahill at a net 4 million with a chance at returning to his Oakland potential is much more valuable to a team not planning on competing this year. With Roger teaching the sinker, he could turn back a good talent at the deadline if we go that route...

If we give up a decent prospect and get Cahill and turn him around a bit, it could burn us in the draft, too. Just a weird move for a team in the first year of a rebuild aimed at 2017.

Well, I'm not sure that I totally agree with your comments earlier with regard to how the Braves budget their money. I think that the team earmarks a specific amount for operations during the season (akin to a war chest) and would rather have seen the money Cahill may/may not receive be applied to something like a deadline acquisition (Braves take on a contract in exchange for prospects), player extension, and/or draft pick bonuses.

Moreover, I guess I'm 100% convicted that rebuilding needs to be a skin-and-bones financial pursuit.

Don't get me wrong, if it is basically a literal peanut for Cahill then there's obviously much more to like about the deal than not (and it would be a gamble that, IMO, is worth taking). I still wouldn't like the money, though.
