Kimbrel/Melvin Trade Thread

#Braves seem likely to DFA Quention, use Maybin as backup CF or part-time CF for defense

---

I'm calling bull**** on that. He should be leading off and playing full-time, if healthy.

Fredi likes EY better.

#Braves Hart said Johnson, Grilli could close games, possibly Jaime eventually, etc.

lolcats.

This whole Jaime situation gives me a lot of confidence in them rebuilding our once great bullpen...

Agreed but this is Fredi's team, he has more say now too. Fun fun. :)

I'm sorry but I cannot for the life of me see why we wouldn't keep Kimbrel at all cost... He was the BEST in baseball and is only 27!

Dominant closers ARE NOT easy to find.... We hadn't had one since Smoltz

I've lost all respect for John Hart

The downside to that scenario is that we are in an era where good hitting is at a premium relative to good pitching. I'd rather have a farm system like the Cubs that is top-heavy in position players.

Agreed. They have some of my favorite position player prospects too.

Wagner did a great job, but your point still stands. Good trade on paper, but I think it'll hurt the 2017 team. More than it helps? That's the question.

I still think that if the Braves are paying Quentin he might as well be out in left as often as health allows. Certainly provides better protection for Freddie than Gomes.

Not like it really matters.

Maybin should play CF and EY can platoon with Gomes...

vs righties:

1. Peterson
2. Maybin
3. Markakis
4. Freeman
5. Callaspo
6. Simmons
7. Bethancourt
8. EY Jr.

vs lefties

1. Peterson
2. Maybin
3. Markakis
4. Freeman
5. Gomes
6. Johnson
7. Simmons
8. Bethancourt

Yes, that is the question. Plus what makes you so confident they'll spend the extra money wisely? Something to think about.

The only nagging thing on this is Craig Kimbrel is precisely the kind of player you should want to market heading to the new stadium, and he is THE best closer in baseball. That cannot be overlooked here. For that reason, I'm not 100 percent supportive, but I am 95-plus percent. Tickled to death we dumped Melvin's salary. With the possible exception of Melky Fat Phuck, most hated Brave for me.

Some of whom will likely be traded for . . . pitching.

It's all a work-in-progress. There's no question we've shed a lot of offense and a lot of the pitching we've acquired is relatively untested, but I think we have the pieces and payroll space to get back to where we need to be.

Dominant relievers actually aren't that difficult to come across. Braves will probably stumble across a couple of them in their own system. Simmons certainly being a possibility if he gets healthy. Kimbrel was among the elite of the elite, but it's kind of crazy just how many dominant late inning relievers there are these days. Considering that fact, it doesn't make sense for a mid market team to spend a bunch of money on a closer.
