heart attack at 34 for a pro athlete? wow.
I remember being really excited about him. He came to Norfolk and pitched and I bought the suite behind home plate to watch him pitch. He was all over the place, his velocity had dropped to 92 mph, and he was actively angry after about every play.

RIP Jose. Was really excited to see this guy come up, all the hype was about his arm, how hard he threw, how much upside there was. Dominated in the minors and was fast tracked to the majors, wonder if that really didn't hinder his development the most. Had a big fastball but that was it, couldn't locate it nor locate his breaking stuff and got pounded my MLB hitters and didn't necessarily seem to have a great attitude or mound presence either.

Still remember the day he was called up against the Expos I think it was. Got rocked. i think Vidro owned him. So much Shanks hype. Someone actually referenceshim in the game thread yesterday comparing his straight fastball to Jaime.

I think this might be the first guy I remember following as a prospect to die. Kind of a ghoulish milestone, I guess.
Here's Capellan's debut against Montreal. He actually wasn't awful- five innings, two runs, four strikeouts, three walks. I mainly remember it for that "fly ball double play" where Andruw threw out Tony Batista at home from an absolutely obscene distance. Batista was probably safe, from what I recall, but it was an extraordinary throw, and far closer than anyone imagined it would have been.
We won the game, but Smoltz blew a three-run lead in the ninth. Smoltz was lock-down for us as a closer, but for whatever reason he really struggled against Philadelphia, Arizona and, above all, Montreal.

Yeah, Andruw threw him out from the edge of the warning track IIRC. I thought that was in his MVP year in 2005 though.
You're correct. If memory serves me well, Andruw threw out someone from the warning track. It was a close call but I think the ump gave Druw benefit of the doubt. Likely wouldn't have that play today if instant replay were available. 2005 it was, and I think it was against the Diamondbacks. Andruw had a great game all around I think, he might've hit a homer or he had multiple outfield assists I think. It was a Sunday afternoon game on TBS because I think Skip was calling it.

I spent quite a bit of time Googling and YouTubing without much luck. There are a bunch of Andruw highlight tapes that I didn't feel like watching. Might be in there.

If my memory serves me correctly--which is no longer the case at an increasing rate--someone compared Foltynewicz to Capellan.
I just remember watching him pitch an inning in the Futures Game and flirt with triple digits. Guy could throw gas.
1st, RIP Jose. That sucks.
2nd, I remember that Andruw play too, if it is the one I am thinking of. Ran down a deep drive, caught it, whirled and threw a strike to home. The sort of thing no one does. I'm pretty sure it was better than the legendary Mays play. At least that is how I choose to remember it ;-)
