And Now...Your 2016 Atlanta Braves

I think the positions I'm most interested in moving forward are CF/LF. We have our answers at 1B, SS and RF (unfortunately), and likely at catcher. Between 2B and 3B, we should be able to find something that works between Peterson, Peraza and Rio Ruiz.

That only leaves the LF and CF spots open to get a right-handed power bat. I think that's all that's missing from making me really excited about our future.

With Smith coming, I’m going to argue that left field is the only spot.

Looking at 2016 we now have 53.6 million committed but with only two noteworthy arbitration players. Shelby Miller in arb 1 which should be a huge amount and Minor in arb 3 who might be traded anyways. We could easily fit in 20+ million dollar contracts for Heywood and Justin Upton. Play Heywood in CF until Markakis's contract runs out. Assuming 20 mill to both in 2016 and not trading Minor would put the team around 100 million in payroll. Where else would we even need to spend money. Dont need to spend money on starters or relievers with all the pitching we have coming through the farm system.

I think Minor is definitely gone. The approach to the rotation going forward doesn't really include him.

Was looking at 2016 FA, some really big names if Hart wants to spend big on someone.

Dont see us in on JUp or Heyward, sorry just cant see it.

Cespedes doesnt seem the type of hitter Hart likes, low OBP, lot of strike outs, but ironically would fit perfect.

LOT of good pitchers.

I dont see us going after an infield type, between Ruiz, Peraza, Jace, and Albies, they should be able to fill 2B/3B.

Avila or Jaso is a good stop-gap C if CB doesnt hit well. I'd like Wieters but i dont see that happening.

Not much on the outfield front, Span, Fowler, Joyce, Austin Jackson.

Cueto, Price, Greinke if he opts out but he'll be 32 so no thanks, Zimmerman, Fister, Shark, Gallarado, ageless Buerhle, Brett Anderson, Kennedy, Latos, Masterson.

Bullpen guys, Feliz is a FA if Dalyn believes we go for him, Clippard, Huston Street, Soria, EOF, Blevins, Affedlt.

In short, looks like a much better market compared to 2015.

I'm interested to see if we do anything in the offensive market. I seriously could see a run at either Heyward or Upton. I'd prefer Heyward (biased...), but I think that Upton is a good fit to bring back.

BUT, I'd be interested to see if we go for an Ace type of pitcher. I could see a guy like Price or Cueto as top targets.
Price LHP
Teheran RHP
Wood LHP
Miller RHP
Folty/Wisler/Banuelos/Cahill... Lots of options.

THEN, use our plethora of pitchers in the minors to make a deal for a strong LFer to CFer.

Lots of options, decent amount of money, good prospects (lol)... let's do something.

Also, I'd love Feliz. Adding him to our BP would be incredible.

I think Detroit keeps Price.

I dont see us going after Heyward or JUp.

But do need to add a couple bats this winter, for sure.

Yeah, my gut says that Price stays as well, but it's hard to say. I'd love Cueto or Zimmerman. Those are my two personally choices afterwards. I think Jason is more realistic than JUP. The whole situation with JUP was just weird.

I'd love to trade for Marte from the Pirates.

Marte-Lf

Peterson/Peraza-2b

Freeman-1b

Markakis-Rf

Maybin-Cf

Simmons-SS

Ruiz-3b

Bet- C

Teheran

Miller

Wood

Folty

Wisler/Man-ban whoever we don't trade for Marte. Reasses CF and 3b for 2017.

Just ran the numbers for 2016, and we have considerable financial flexibility. $40m to $50m to spend depending on budget . . . and that's assuming Minor, CJ, and Grilli are back. If we want to, we could sign or trade for a front line SP AND a middle-of-the-order RHH bat for LF or 3B. I think the $ will ultimately be spent more creatively than that (extensions, international FAs, etc.), but any way you slice it - we will have the resources to be competitive in 2016.

The people who are counting on Mallex Smith to do anything in the big leagues are getting way ahead of themselves, IMO

John Hart is going to make a big splash this offseason. You wait and see.

I think we sign Dexter Fowler for sure
We will be major players in the Heyward and JUp sweepstakes
He will kick the tires on all of the upper echelon free agent starters including Price, Zimmerman, and Grienke (if he opts out)
I look for him to make a big push for Beltre or Tulo
He will also take a long hard look at Wieters

Its about damn time we sign Greinke. I think he answered any question about him performing in a big market or in high pressure games. You know what he did when he quit baseball for a while, he went to Atlanta Braves spring training games. He was the mystery pitcher Bill always talked about.

I actually completely agree with this. I think you'll see at least an impact starter coming over along with a solid bat or two.

In the wake of the Kimbrel deal he said that they planned to be very aggressive with the money that was freed up.

Some of you never learn. Yeah, this past winter was a unique set of circumstances. In other ways, it's typical because every season, there's always substantial roster turnover. Hell, this team is going to look quite a bit different by the end of this season, if not even sooner (All Star break). Although some of you are on the right track (Mike Minor's days most assuredly are numbered), there are others who are not ("only one or two spots open!"). The only likely "untouchables" are Freeman, Simmons, Bethancourt and probably the top 3 starters. Markakis will be around because of his contract, his ties to the area and presumably he'll be expected to provide some leadership. Pretty much anybody else is fair game.

I'd argue that Grilli isn't likely to be traded unless someone really blows Hart away with an offer because his contract is picture-perfect for us right now since it only gets smaller moving forward as he grooms his own replacement, but it's tough to argue that very much. If Wisler continues to impress like he did yesterday and Folty can be groomed as a Closer, I'd add the two of them and probably Peraza to that list.

I'm pretty sure the news on Minor seals his fate with the organization and that he won't be offered a deal next winter, so if Banuelos has designs on becoming a starter in Atlanta he better get it together fast - the money is there to go after Price IF he doesn't sign an extension with the Tigers, and I can't imagine we'll run Manny out there as a 5th starter over Wisler. Adding Price and Cespedes in free-agency or trading from some of the depth they've now accrued makes this team a contender again pretty quickly.
