April 22nd:

1876: The Boston Red Caps defeat the Philadelphia Athletics 6-5 in the first National League game.

1891: The Pittsburgh Pirates lose to Chicago 7-6 in their first game.

1903: The Highlanders, later renamed the Yankees, lose their first game to Washington 3-1.

1914: In his first professional game, Babe Ruth pitches Baltimore to a 6-0 win over Providence in the International League.

1959: In the seventh inning of a 20-6 win over the A's, the White Sox score eleven runs, but collect just one hit. The A's help out with two errors, ten walks, and hitting one batter.

1970: In a 2-1 win over the Padres, the Mets Tom Seaver ties a M.L. record with 19 strikeouts.

1988: The Twins trade right fielder Tom Brunasky to the Cardinals for second baseman Tommy Herr.

1993: The Mariners Chris Bosio pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Red Sox.

2000: Home runs by Mark McGwire and Fernando Tatis give the Cardinals 42 for the month, setting a N.L record for April.

2008: The Braves John Smoltz records his 3,000th career strikeout.

1919: Walter Johnson records his fifth Opening Day shutout in a 1-0 win over the A's.

1921: Hall of Famer Warren Spahn is born in Buffalo, New York.

1954: Hank Aaron hits his first M.L. home run.

1958: The Dodgers Pee Wee Reese plays in his 2,000th M.L. game.

1962: In their tenth try, the Mets win their first game, defeating the Pirates 9-1.

1999: The Cardinals Fernando Tatis becomes the first player to hit two grand slams in one inning. He does it in the third inning against the Dodgers.

2000: In a 10-7 win over the Blue Jays, Bernie Williams and Jorge Posada become the first teammates to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game.

2008: With a 7-6 victory over the Rockies, the Cubs join the Giants as the only teams to win 10,000 games.

2013: The Braves Justin and B.J. Upton become the second brothers to hit back-to-back home runs during a 10-2 win over the Rockies. The only other brothers to do so were Lloyd and Paul Waner for the Pirates in 1938.

1945: The owners elect U.S. Senator Happy Chandler to succeed Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as commissioner of baseball.

1962: Sandy Koufax ties the M.L. record of 18 strikeouts in the Dodgers 10-2 win over the Cubs.

1962: Commissioner Ford Frick fines Mets manager Casey Stengel $500 for appearing in a beer ad.

1965: Mets manager Casey Stengel wins his 3,000th game.

1987: In a 6-5 Yankees win over the Indians, Rickey Henderson becomes the first player to homer off two 300-game winners in the same game. He hits a solo homer off Phil Niekro in the eighth, then a two run shot off Steve Carlton in the ninth.

1998: In a 12-4 win over the Cubs, the Dodgers Mike Piazza ties a M.L. record with his third grand slam of the month.
 
April 24th:

1933: Yankees pitcher Russ Van Atta, making his M.L. debut, goes 4-4 and shut out the Senators in a 16-0 win.

1967: Dodgers third baseman Jim Lefebvre commits three errors in the fourth inning of a 7-1 loss to the Braves.

1976: During the fourth inning of the Cubs/Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium, two trespasser run into the outfield with an American flag with the intent to burn it. Just as they were trying to, the Cubs Rick Monday takes the flag away from them, making him a national hero. He will be presented with that flag in a pregame ceremony at Wrigley Field by Dodgers executive Al Campanis as a measure of thanks. Monday had served six years in the Marine Reserves.

1978: The Cardinals fire manager Vern Rapp and replace him with Ken Boyer.

1978: The Phillie Phanatic mascot makes his debut at Veterans Stadium between the Cubs and Phillies.

1984: In a 2-1 win over the Expos, the Mets Dwight Gooden becomes the first teenager since Bert Blyleven in 1970 to strike out ten batters.

1989: The Mariners trade Mark Langston and Mike Campbell to the Expos for Brian Holman, Gene Harris, and Randy Johnson.

1995: After the end of the 257-day strike, the delayed season begins with the Dodgers beating the Marlins 8-7.

1998: In the Orioles game against the A's, Cal Ripken, Jr. plays in his 2,500th straight game.

2001: The Padres Rickey Henderson walks for the 2,063rd time in his career, breaking Babe Ruth's record.

1901: The A's lose to the Senators 5-1 in their American League debut.

1902: Future Hall of Famer Addie Joss makes his M.L. debut for the Cleveland Bronchos (later the Indians), pitching a one-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Browns.

1905: In a 2-1 win over the Pirates, the Cubs Jack McCarthy becomes the only outfielder to throw out three runners at home in the same game.

1941: Wrigley Field becomes the first ballpark to have an organ for fan entertainment.

1959: Playing for the Yomiuri Giants, Japanese star Sadaharu Oh hits the first of his 868 career home runs.

1961: Roger Maris hits his first home run of the season in the Yankees 13-11 win over the Tigers in Detroit.

1980: In the Phillies 7-0 win over the Cardinals, Steve Carlton pitches his N.L. record sixth one-hitter.

1982: Gene Michael takes over as Yankees manager for the second time, succeeding Bob Lemon, who replaced him last season.

1990: In a 1-0 win over the White Sox, the Rangers Nolan Ryan ties Bob Feller's M.L. record by pitching his 12th one-hitter.

1995: The Rockies defeat the Mets in 14 innings 11-9, in the first game at Coors Field.

2000: The Cardinals set a M.L. record by hitting 50 home runs in April.

2002: After a 6-16 start, the Rockies fire manager Buddy Bell and replace him with hitting coach Clint Hurdle.
 
April 27th:

1896: Hall of Famer Rogers Hornsby is born in Winters, Texas.

1947: Before the Senators/Yankees game, a ceremony is held for the ailing Babe Ruth. 58,000 fans attended the ceremony.

1961: The Angels lose their first home game to the Twins 4-2. Before the game, in what was his final appearance at a ballpark, Ty Cobb threw the ceremonial first pitch.

1968: The Orioles Tom Phoebus pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Red Sox.

1971: Hank Aaron hits his 600th career home run.

1972: The Padres fire manager Preston Gomez and replace him with third base coach Don Zimmer.

1973: In a 3-0 win over the Tigers, the Royals Steve Busby becomes the 13th rookie in M.L. history to pitch a no-hitter.

1981: Dodgers 20-year old rookie pitcher Fernando Valenzuela pitches his fourth shutout in five game, beating the Giants 5-0.

1983: In the eighth inning against the Expos, Nolan Ryan strikes out Brad Mills for his 3,509th strikeout, breaking Walter Johnson's record.

1994: The Twins Scott Erickson pitches a no-hitter in a 6-0 win over the Brewers.

1996: Barry Bonds becomes the fourth player in M.L. history to record 300 home runs and 300 stolen bases, joining Andre Dawson, father Bobby Bonds, and godfather Willie Mays.

2000: In the most severe punishment given for a bench-clearing brawl, 16 players from the Tigers and White Sox from their fight five days earlier for a total of 82 games. Managers Phil Garner of the Tigers and the White Sox Jerry Manuel are both suspended eight games.

2002: The Red Sox Derek Lowe pitches a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over the Devil Rays.

2004: Mike Piazza hits his 351st home run as a catcher, tying Carlton Fisk's record.
 
April 28th:

1901: The White Sox Bock Baker sets a M.L. record by giving up 22 hits to the Cleveland Blues (who collected 23 total hits) in a 13-1 loss. All of Cleveland's hits were singles.

1961: The Braves Warren Spahn pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 win over the Giants. Spahn was 40 years old, making him the second oldest to pitch a no-hitter. Only Cy Young was older.

1964: Hall of Famer Barry Larkin is born in Cincinnati, Ohio.

1985: Billy Martin becomes the Yankees manager for the fourth time, replacing the fired Yogi Berra.

1988: With a 4-2 loss to the Twins, the Orioles set a new A.L. record with a 21-game losing streak to start a season.

1998: The Rangers Juan Gonzalez sets a new April record with 35 RBIs.

2010: The Phillies and Ryan Howard agree to a five year extension worth $125 million.

2012: Bryce Harper doubles and collects a sacrifice fly in his M.L. debut as the Nationals lose to the Dodgers 4-3.
 
April 29th:

1922: The Giants hit four inside-the-park home runs in a 13-4 win over the Braves.

1931: The Indians Wes Ferrell pitches a no-hitter in a 7-0 win over the Browns.

1933: Senators catcher Luke Sewell tags out the Yankees Lou Gehrig and Dixie Walker on the same play.

1939: In the fourth inning against the Senators, Lou Gehrig records the last of his 2,721 career hits. That stands as a Yankees record until Derek Jeter breaks it in 2009.

1960: Stan Musial plays his 1,000th game at first base, making him the first to play that many games at two positions. He played 1,513 games in the Cardinals outfield.

1981: Steve Carlton becomes the sixth pitcher in M.L. history to record 3,000 strikeouts. He's the first lefty to do so.

1986: In a 3-1 Red Sox win over the Mariners, Roger Clemens sets a M.L. record with 20 strikeouts.

1988: After 21 straight losses to start the season, the Orioles get their first victory, beating the White Sox 9-0.

1990: After an A.L. record 238 saves, the Royals Dan Quisenberry retires.

1996: The Mets John Franco becomes the first lefty to record 300 saves.

2000: After losing their first six, the Giants record their first win at SBC Park, beating the Expos 2-1.

2004: An International League game between the Lousiville Bats and the Indianapolis Indians is delayed for 20 minutes before the fourth inning. Indians first baseman Jeff Liefer had was stuck in the dugout bathroom and had to be let out by a maintenance crew.

2007: Trevor Hoffman appears in his 803rd game for the Padres, setting a record for appearances with one team.
