Around Baseball 2015 Edition

He's been helping carry Houston this past week including 5 homers in his last 5 and something like 12-14 RBI's. He had the big 9th inning double vs the A's to bring them back and again today hit a homer to win it 7-6 after they blew a 6-1 lead (and also his three run homer in the first got them off to a 3-0 lead early). Now Houston has the best record in the AL and their best start in franchise history at 18-7. They have also won ten straight, two off their franchise record 12 straight. It will be interesting to see if they tie or break that record against Texas next. They have their ace going tomorrow so they have a shot.

Dude is a beast. Now that he doesn't have to work the field and can work on his hitting in a almost exclusive DH role, I expect 35-40 homers. Honestly, with his swing and in that ballpark, he sure as hell better.

Well, he's 25. I would say 28 or so.

I think you can make that determination sooner. Heyward will always be a valuable player becuase of the things he does outside of hitting but he will never be a great or even good hitter.

He was a good hitter every year in Atlanta.

I'm on board with you that's he's been a slight disappointment with the bat, but let's not rewrite history for the sake of it.

I guess I have a different definition of good. He has some good years but overall I don't believe his cumulative body of offensive work screams good hitter. Overall really good player but I'm just focussing on his offensive issues at this point.

I think "slight" is an understatement. He was supposed to be much better with the bat than he has been thus far, even with his couple of really good seasons mixed in.

I think that's silly to say right now. Great? You have a valid point. Good? He's already shown he can be a good hitter.

I am glad Gattis is doing well, i never hated him.

Atlanta just had to move him given he's always hurt and more of an AL player.

Hope he keeps it going.

Heyward has been regressing for a few years right now. The book came out on him and he hasn't been able to adjust yet. After a few yeras I'm starting to doubt if he will ever be able to do that.

Yeah. Maybe. But he was just a little more power away from good last year. That's the real question. Power. If that develops, he could stay the same hitter he is right now and put up good numbers.

The Padres acquired the rights of catcher Yenier Bello from the Joplin Blasters of the independent American Association. The Braves signed Bello out of Cuba last year, but he was given his release this spring. The 30-year-old will provide some organizational depth behind the plate.

News on a couple former Braves relievers . . .

Jordan Walden is seeking a second opinion for his right biceps inflammation.
Walden had MRIs recently on his shoulder and bicep, and they'll now be looked at by a different set of eyes. He was complaining about shoulder stiffness on Saturday. While the hope is that there's no structural damage to the arm and that this is merely inflammation, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has indicated that there's at least some concern this could be more serious.

Cubs recalled LHP James Russell from Triple-A Iowa.
The team signed Russell to a minor league contract on April 8. He'll provide them with some necessary, proven bullpen depth. Last season, he posted a 2.97 ERA and a 42/20 K/BB ratio over 57 2/3 innings between the Cubs and the Braves.

Wandy throws 8 innings of 1 run ball against the hot Astros in Houston.

The front office definitely made the wrong left-handed choice for the #5 spot.

The Wandy that had 8 BBs in 9.1 IP coming in to today?
For some really odd, unknown reason, I have a feeling some of you would have been bitching about keeping Wandy over Stults before tonight, seeing as Wandy was terrible before tonight (and worse last year than Stults).
