Around Baseball 2015 Edition

So far this year Harper has exceeded anything that Cabrera has done...yes I know small sample size and recent hot stretch.

In every great hitters numbers that are insane hot stretches. Harper should not be penalized for that.

Cabrera had a stretch in 2013 from April to August 25th:

537 PA 44 Homeruns .363 BA .454 OBP .698 SLG for a wRC+ of 207.

That is essentially what Bryce has done this year (212 wRC) but over 5 times as many plate appearances. But yeah, Miggy has never done that before.

This is a dumb argument, all of you can essentially be right. Harper *could* be the best hitter in baseball right now, but I think it's silly and premature to spout off about how he is. The dude is crazy talented and as thethe has said, when healthy he's hit very well. He's done some wild things for a 21 year old player. If he's able to consistently do so then he's certainly going to be called among; or the best hitter in baseball.

If you guys wants to keep up; go ahead. I will sit in the corner and laugh because I remember Zito saying Harper won't ever be able to hit an offspeed pitch.

Now, with less than a month left in the regular season, we learn Harper supposedly has had hip pain since crashing into the outfield wall on April 29th. He stayed in the lineup in spite of hurting his ribcage that day and then played on after another date with the wall on May 13th when he hurt his left knee. As any headstrong athlete might – but especially one who is a stubborn twenty year old – Harper continued to take the field, aggressively, though less productively, until aggravating the knee with a headfirst slide on May 25th. The diagnosis was bursitis and was secondary to the trauma from contact. Harper ultimately voiced his regrets for playing hurt – doing so likely compounded his recovery time.

Well, it seems Harper was giving lip service to having learned that lesson. Only after reportedly limping around the field and base paths these last few days did he admit his sore left hip was getting in the way. Evidently the player has been receiving treatment on the hip from the training staff for an undisclosed period of time.

And? How does any of that dispute what I said? The dude ended up having off-season knee surgery. Pretty clear the knee injury is what kept him sidelined, regardless of what other injuries he may have had.

Yes, that has already been made clear.

I'm glad that we are now able to compare Harper to Cabrera. That just proves my point that he is performing like one of the best if not best hitters in baseball. For Harpers sake hopefully he gets some better lineup protection as well.

Because Harper is still a great hitter and has shown that in the past outside of this hot stretch.

For effs sake, the guy was a monster at 19 years of age. I get that people feel my overbearing statements are distasteful but to not think its more than likely that Harper will become at least one of the top 5 hitters in baseball is insane to me. Harper to me is like Lebron. Been hyped up forever and has more than lived up to the hype.

Now you are saying things that nobody said, Captain Honesty. No one is claiming that Harper can't become a top 5 hitter in baseball and no one is saying he hasn't had an impressive career for a young player. We are just calling you out on your claim that Harper is already the best hitter in baseball.

No one disagrees that Harper has been the best hitter in baseball in May.

Bc thethe was correct about playing through injuries. (well, actually he Bryce was injured before thethe thought he was)

That hasn't been your point. And if it was nobody would be arguing with you. There is a difference between performing like one of the best hitters in baseball and being the best hitter in baseball.

Bryce is going to walk a ton. Pitchers nowadays aren't just trying to nibble with him, they are throwing nowhere close..and he's a fairly patient hitter. Plus, he's already had more intentional walks than he's ever had in a season.

I disagree...not when you are dealing with someone of this talent level.

Is anyone really shocked that Harper is dominating? They shouldn't be.

Was anyone shocked when Lebron started posting some of the best seasons of all time?

Of course thats the case and nobody really in the Nationals lineup is all that intimidating. If Rendon comes back and hits then Harper is going to have a good ole time.

Sure there is. Am I shocked he has had a stretch like this? No. Would I be if he did this all season and continued to post WRC+ seasons in the 170 or higher range? Yeah I would be.

And basketball is a different sport and not comparable.

Mike Trout had a wRC+ of 195 through June of last year. Let's not forget that he has a much longer track record of hitting success and has been incredibly consistent for over 3 years now.

Harper has proven that he can reach Trout and Miguel Cabrera's level. Now can he can do it consistently? Once he has done that THEN this is a debate worth having.

Every player plays through injuries. It's part of baseball. The injury that thethe was referring to that sidelined him like 40 games was the knee injury.

Obviously.

There are also different degrees of injuries.

And another homer. Wow

I've spent the last couple of nights watching Yoan Moncada's pro debut. Gold chains worth approximately 1/4 Cuba's GDP, impressive athleticism, good hustle, and SUPER raw. Looked bad against low-A offspeed stuff. I see the tools, but he's a long way from plugging into a big league lineup.

If you guys wants to keep up; go ahead. I will sit in the corner and laugh because I remember Zito saying Harper won't ever be able to hit an offspeed pitch.

Never said that. I said he has a hitch in his power swing that could lead to timing issues with deceptive offspeed pitches. But yeah, you can misconstrue that.

Saw that Todd Redmond was DFA'd by the Jays . . . I wasn't even aware that he was in the bigs, but let's pour out a Mich Ultra for Tood (anyone remember that?), a good perpetually-AAA soldier for us back in the day.
