May

There are two options, he either suddenly became a good player at age 28, or he is playing over his head right now. I'm guessing we are most likely seeing the best of Mr Maybin, so it is probably time to sell high on him.

All assuming the team is out of contention at the deadline, of course.

For me that's th ecatch with him. Maybe Maybin has turned it around. He wouldn't be th efirst player to catch on in his late 20s. Jose Bautista and Ben Zobrist are 2 recent examples of that.

Matt Carpenter as well.

So we should trade him for a couple bullpen arms?

No one is gonna trade anything significant for him and given we wont be in on Justin/Jason/Ces, might as well keep him next year.

Players have never gotten better late in their 20's before.

Im not saying he's untouchable but i dont know if i'd trade him just to trade him.

I don't see anyone suggesting to unload him for a couple bullpen arms, or to trade him just to trade him. Bit what if a contending team offers a top 50 prospect for maybin plus JJohnson at the deadline? That's exactly why Hart acquired these players.

Im pretty sure that isnt gonna happen so we dont gotta worry about that.

Only players i expect to be dealt are Grilli, JJ, and maybe KJ/AJ.

I'd settle for a .750 OPS and league average defense from my center fielder.

I'd be cool w/ keeping Maybin if I thought he'd produce a 750 OPS, play average CF defense, and be healthy for 140-150 games per season. He might have a shot at the 750 OPS b/w now and the end of 2016, but I worry about the other two "criteria".

Maybin is not a butcher in CF, but I'm hoping we can find someone better. He's played a little over 1000 innings over the past three years, so a good - not great - sample to judge him on. Here are his ranks against other CF that played at least 1000 innings b/w 2013 and 2015:

DRS: 28th our of 36
UZR / 150: 29th out of 36

He seems below average in CF to me with the eye test, and solidly below average looking at the stats.

Doesn't need to be top 50. Especially if they trade for CJ as well. If we unload every bad contract we can't expect too much back. For example the Twinkies haven't gotten much from Aaron Hicks. Maybe they'd take on Maybin. Also Johnson could be a potential addition for them. Say they offer back Jorge Polanco and Adam Walker neither are true top prospects. Polnaco would probably be our second best position prospect behind Peraza. He would be good infield prospect depth. In case we decide to move Peraza to the OF or someone gets hurt having him would be nice. Walker has showcased awesome power. Something our system is absent of. K rate is a massive concern but it's a worthwhile gamble.

Just as a reference point to the numbers above on Maybin, here's the same view for defensive savant Nick Markakis in RF (min 1000 innings b/w 2013 and 2015).

DRS: 23rd out of 32
UZR / 150: 17th out of 32

At least Maybin seems to act like he gives a damn on defense. That's one of the things I didn't like about watching Melvin play.

You must've forgotten when Melvin would launch throws to homeplate on tagging plays and the ball sail 10 feet over the catcher's head.

I said JJ not CJ, but if maybin helps unload CJ then I'm all for that deal as well.

People continue to not give enough credit for people trying to hit while playing half their games in SD

I wouldn't pay either that much, but at this stage in their careers Maybin is far more valuable than Nick.
