6/10/15: GDT - San Diego Padres @ Atlanta Braves

I mean the team was hovering right around .300 the first two months of the year which is generally what the league averge is across baseball. If a team has a 370 BABIP through the first 10 days or so of the month then yes I will generally say that's been luck and should not be expected to continue. These things have a way of correcting itself.

So my point remains. When KJ went out, AJ stopped hitting, and Simmons cooled off this team started hitting like crap. Take out KJ next year and have CB all year. Those could be problem positions. 3B is still a problem issue. Maybin is up in the air imo although the signs look good.

My point is that while the offnese has been better than expected. It's still fueld by people not expected to be here next year and surprise performances. We can't expect that to continue and say next year isn't an issue.

I don't think its too crazy to have Uribe at 3b and KJ at LF another year. They won't break the budget, that's for sure, and they could be as productive as they've been.

They will just flip some of their hitting for pitching. I hear they have a long history of doing that.

they might have to, which will reduce their offensive core.
they could get probably get a decent starter for Castro, but he's not getting any better at this point.

still hate the "KJ and AJ were hot so that's why our offense will definitely regress" argument. as i've said 100 times, this happens every year on almost every team - guys have stretches of production, sometimes a whole season, that you didn't expect and that won't continue forever. the Giants right now are getting crazy production from like, every spot in the lineup. they just got an 11 K no-hitter from Chris Heston. these things happen.

Certainly within the realm of possibility. Just given all of that I don't think we should be saying we will be contenders next year. Besides, the team is much more fun without expectations.

So we should look at the offense to date and expect it to be just as good next year when those players likely aren't even on the team?

Agreed the team is more fun bc the expectations were zero. If we thought we were supposed to be contenders we'd be just as miserable as last year

I don't expect it to be worse just because they aren't on the team.

Sure. That all depends on the moves that are made in the offseason. I still think there are a few spots of need that need to be addressed in the lineup before we are contenders. Maybin living up to his potential would be an amazing start.

To those that are true beleivers in him. At what point do you look at an extension?

I think he's signed through 2017 right? By then he's 30/31... that's when you move on IMO

No time soon. I'm not an iron-clad believer. But, there's just no reason to right now. He's affordable for the next 2.5 years. So let him continue to prove it.

Unless the pen significantly improves this team is not competing this year. And even if it does improve we are only competing for a division title. We can't compete yet with the Cards/Dodgers/Giants. But, I agree this is no longer about 2017. Braves are ready to be legit contendors in 2016 for sure.

Even with the pen as it is two games out at this point of the season is competing in my book. I guess I come at it from an '85-'90 perspective where any hope of postseason was over by mid-June or July.
